This fantastic lady is running one more time. At 89 it just might be her last. I am always amazed when I hear about this woman. Over 32 years (11 straight terms) of being mayor. She has won some of the elections without a platform and won with 92% in one election and many other times with overwhelming majority.

The most interesting thing is that she has put Mississauga in the black and with a nice surplus right now. All while making commitments and improvements to the city.

What a gal!!

Yes, GH, we in Mississauga are lucky to have this Hurricane in full force for four more years!

-----------------------------------------------------------

- 89 year old Hurricane Hazel McCallion, mayor of Canada's sixth largest and best managed and only major debt free city and who was voted three years ago in an on line global poll as the second best mayor in the world, Wednesday officially registered to run for her 12th consecutive term as mayor.

- Hazel remains as sharp as a tack, full of energy and enthusiasm for Mississauga and for being mayor, is more knowledgeable than any politician in the country concerning municipal issues, trends and developments, and is a living legend among Mississauga residents of all ages and backgrounds.

- Once again, Hazel will not actively campaign other than attending the all candidates' debates against her nine opponents for mayor, will spend not a dollar on her reelection, and has requested that anyone who wishes to financially support her campaign should donate the money to a registered charity instead.

- McCallion normally wins reelection by 90-95% of the vote, leaving the other 10-13 candidates to lose their deposits. But since she is 89 (90 next February) and has had a few difficulties this year primarily orchestrated by councillor and disgraced former Liberal MP Carolyn "Psycho" Parrish (who is still too chicken to run against Hazel even though she wants to be mayor so badly she is rumoured to spontaneously start drooling when she see the chain of office), I expect that Hazel may slip badly to as low as 80% of the vote.

- Sadly, our marvellous common sense conservative mayor says that this will be her last four year term as mayor which will finish up as twelve terms and 36 straight years as the mayor of our city.

- Anyhow, Hazel is a deserved living legend and such an inspiring change from those weasels who go into politics for the money and who will say and do anything, and then later do the opposite, just to get elected.

Who wouldn't vote for their Gram-ma-ma?

But her achievement might be on the cusp of a new trend:

No retirement for these older folks, just work

For Sally Gordon, 101, of Lincoln, Nebraska, working is a choice, but she likes the extra income, too. She uses her money to fix up her house. She's held a steady job since the late 1920s.

"I used to be a model, and now I'm a Model T," Gordon jokes. "I hope there's a lot of mileage left."

In August, Gordon was recognized by Experience Works, the nation's largest nonprofit training and employment organization for older workers, as America's Outstanding Oldest Worker for 2010. Last year's award went to a 101-year-old attorney in Texas.

The number of centenarians, people who are at least 100, has more than quadrupled in the last 30 years. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates there are 67,669 centenarians in the U.S. as of July 2010, up from 15,099 in 1980.

Bad, bad, bad idea... and not because of anything I may think about her policy... She should have spent the past five to ten years finding somebody that can step in as a mayor and continue her polotics, and groom that person for the job. There will be a vacuum when she leaves, especially is she dies on the job... Time to pass the torch, Hazel.

In an interview on CBC radio Hazel said that she will step down when someone steps up with the ability toe run Mississauga the way it needs to be run (in the black).

When I went to Cornell Cayuga Height had a mayor who, I think, was 92 (edited to reflect age of 79 then, 92 at retirement). He was also a Professor Emeritus at Cornell and quite an active one. He taught me English Constitutional Law. One of my everlasting regrets is that I did not realize I was in the presence of a giant. Hurricane Hazel sounds like one.

Well, after 30 years they have not found anyone who would step up to the plate, let alone finding anyone to do the job like she has. Whatever she does for the books, is something that needs to be stepped up and used on the national scale. Would be damn nice to see the whole country in the black.

Well, in fact in the past terms Hazel has had a fight trying to keep certain Councilors from spending the farm on their pet projects. She is one frugal but sensible lady whom developers respect and admire even while she is opposing them.

She seems like a true conservative in my view! And whatever deals she has made in the past has definitely worked out for Mississauga for the better.

- GH ... Exactly! And I should mention that I attended The Southside Shuffle Blues Festival in Port Credit on Saturday where Hazel and Lincoln Alexander were the guests of honour at the ribbon cutting and spoke briefly with Hazel and watched as she led the marching band, stopping frequnetly to dance and to chat with bystanders, the three blocks of the parade route and back again. I can tell you without reservation that McCallion remains in simply astoundingly good physical and mental shape so that there is no basis for excluding her from a final term because she is 89. Sadly, Lincoln Alexander who is 88 and used to be an 6'4" giant of a man with a booming voice who dominated any space he entered is now confined to a wheelchair, thin and shrivelled up, and speaks mostly in a whisper. But he's not running for anything and at least he is still reasonably alert mentally.

Yes. I would say so...a "small 'c'" conservative though...you know the kind that we all can respect regardless of our political leanings and not like the crackpots that call themselves Conservatives today,

Hmm charter.rights, that gives me an idea for another thread altogether. But yes, she is a conservative. You don't get in the black by investing in bad projects. And putting money where it will be most effective and will produce good results. Although I would suspect she's had a few bad deals. But with being the mayor, I guess you could change that quick as well.

I'd guess her constituents love her and respect what she has done. Or else she would not be the longest running mayor of a city in this country.

I don't believe that being a small 'c' conservative is the reason she has been in the black per se, since history has proven that conservatives and Conservatives have spent us far into a hole more than they have ever saved us from one. And the fact that a fiscally conservative / liberal Paul Martin was largely responsible for putting Canada in the black - only to have Stephen Harper spend away nearly $100 billion in one fell swoop - is closer to the truth.

I think there is more to it than that...especially since during Hazel's terms Mississauga was one of the fastest growing regions in North America. Developer money (which is neither red nor blue) has a lot to do with, I'm sure.

She's Mayor of Mississauga. Although I like her and the job she has done, she IS Mayor of Mississauga.

Its not like she has built anything of substance in that city. Well unless you count the countries ugliest buidling, City Hall. Granted , her books are in order which is a definite plus.

Did you know if you punch up Attractions/features for Mississauga on your GPS it answers..........."Nothing" ?
