jbg Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Is Obama Really Better Than Bush? I thought a more Third World-oriented President would avoid some of the nonesense referenced below. I'm disappointed. Kabul escape: U.N. workers scramble over roofs (link) Taliban target staff in deadly bombing that claims 11, including American KABUL - There was no way out for Miles Robertson, working in Afghanistan as a U.N. elections adviser. He was awakened by gunfire and feared he and his wife would be taken hostage. First, the lanky Australian started to step onto the balcony of the guest house where he and dozens of other U.N. staffers were staying, but shots drove him back inside. Finally, the room filling with smoke and fearing he and his wife would not survive, they placed moist towels over their faces, climbed out a window and scrambled over the roof until they could jump to safety. Taliban militants wearing suicide vests and armed with guns and grenades had attacked the three-story residential hotel at dawn Wednesday in what their spokesman said was a bid to derail the Nov. 7 runoff election. ************** After a two-hour battle, 11 people were dead — including five U.N. staff members and the three attackers. One of the dead was American, the U.S. Embassy said. Car bomb kills 90 in Pakistan as Hillary Clinton visits (link) By Zeeshan Haider and Andrew Quinn ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - A car bomb ripped through a crowded market killing 90 people in Pakistan's city of Peshawar on Wednesday, just hours after Washington's top diplomat arrived pledging a fresh start in sometimes strained relations. Wednesday's bomb, the latest urban attack since the army launched a major assault on rural Taliban strongholds two weeks ago, was the deadliest since 2007 when around 140 died at a procession to welcome home former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated just weeks later. The bomb went off in the busy Peepal Mandi market street in a city that for years served as the headquarters of the Pakistan- and U.S.- backed mujahideen war against the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan. ********* Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Melanie_ Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Wow, you have an incredible belief in the power of the American president, no matter who he is. Holding Obama responsible for everything that happens in the world is a pretty myopic viewpoint. My point is that the likes of you have been saying that Bush personified American evil and that his replacement would work wonders. Well, maybe not. Melanie_ Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 My pointis that the likes of you have been saying that Bush personified American evil and that his replacement would work wonders. Well, maybe not. Well, maybe not the likes of me, personally. I just think it's pretty funny that you think the American president is so omnipotent that he should be able to prevent this kind of thing. KeyStone Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Yes, the rest of the world did not immediately stop all violence the moment Obama became President. Clearly, the softer approach is a failure. Kill 'em all. Quote
