punked Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 (edited) Dobbin maybe you are right. I'll tell you what Dobbin if this is so he can run for the Liberals the west just got competitive fast. If this is so he can run for the NDP the west just got competitive fast. If this is so he can enjoy life, the West just went conservative sea of Blue. Although he has made several appearances across the country with Jack Layton over the last two months sooooooo. That really means nothing. Edited August 27, 2009 by punked Quote

punked Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 And I was told how wrong I was about my thoughts on him not running again. I said you were right what else do you want me to say Dobbin? Candidate for who though? He has a PC streak through him, although he gave addressed the NDP convention like a week ago how NDP he is and how much he loves the party? He has been out with Jack, although I can't see someone like that with the power he has joining a fourth party. Hmmmmmmmm. I hope it is the NDP. Quote

That really means nothing. There seemed to be indications all this past spring about it. After 10 years as premier and being in the Legislature since 1986, it seemed he was looking weary at the end of this spring session. I think he has had a few job offers. I would not even be surprised at some international job offers. Given how Lloyd Axworthy is able to get people to work at the University of Winnipeg, he might have a job there. Some hard decisions were coming in shuffling the cabinet. It was those type of decisions that led to NDP collapsing in 1988. There are several NDPer according to Doer who will not run in the next election. I think there are a few at the top level who might simply be burned out. We'll see what happens. I think Doer could have won again but I was wondering if there were some in his party were looking for renewal and new blood. There are a lot of ministers now who have been in place for 10 years. That is a heck of long time to be in cabinet. Quote

jdobbin Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 I told you... You are the man in Manitoba when it comes to having a finger on the pulse.Good call. I often wondered if there had been a frank discussion with Blaikie about his future when he recruited Blaikie. I don't think he was so bold as to say the job as leader was Blaikie's but he may have dangled the potential there. There are a few NDP who won't be running again. There are a few who might be reconsidering now that the leadership is up for grabs. There is no one who comes close to Doer in popularity in his party or anyone else's. Quote

You going to run again now seems like the right time. Quote

Maybe your Liberals can grab a few seats next election. You going to run again now seems like the right time. I think it will be hard for the Liberals to make gains unless they too have some renewal in their leadership. Jon Gerrard has been leader since 1998 and an MLA since 1999. He is well liked but doesn't have the popularity that Doer does. There may be some Liberals who would like his job now that Doer is stepping down. The Tories performed much stronger in the spring session. Their leader Hugh McFayden was a better performer. If they avoid pitfalls of policies that mention the Winnipeg Jets, they could do well in some seats that were won in large part because of Doer's coattails. Edited August 27, 2009 by jdobbin Quote

He was rural, conservative and Manitoba was backwards for a very long time under him. I think most Manitobans would argue that Duff Roblin was the best premier Manitoba ever had. His foresight has saved Manitoba time and time again. Edited August 27, 2009 by jdobbin Quote
jdobbin Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 Thank GOD we'll finally be rid of him. He will not be missed!!! This could be the best opportunity the PCs have had in a decade. Now, if they can get their platform and their message clear, they could make major gains. Even you have to admit that the Winnipeg Jets promise crushed them in the last election. Quote

Sorry off topic you going to run Dobbin for the Liberals? I doubt they will combine with the Tories. There never has been a movement in that direction. I don't think I'd run. It isn't like we are going to see an election anytime soon. Even with Doer leaving, a majority ensures that the NDP will go a few years from now. Quote

It isn't like we are going to see an election anytime soon. Even with Doer leaving, a majority ensures that the NDP will go a few years from now. Do you think there's any chance of Doer replacing Layton? It might be the start of finally getting the federal NDP at least up to the 1970's... It might be the start of finally getting the federal NDP at least up to the 1970's... None at all. He can't speak a lick of French and that would be a setback for the NDP party. I doubt any leader can get a way without speaking the two official languages. Quote

madmax Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 (edited) Sorry off topic you going to run Dobbin for the Liberals? I find it amusing, that many of the people Dobbin has butted heads with over the time I have been here, ask him if he would run for the Liberals or Run Again. Regardless of his partisanship, I think it is pretty much a certain level of respect, debate, and conviction that has MLW pundits asking you (jdobbin) of your intentions. Consider that a bonus. Besides, you have had 20 years to plan you next shot. Edited August 27, 2009 by madmax Quote

It might be the start of finally getting the federal NDP at least up to the 1970's... The 70s must be good the economy in Manitoba is outperforming 9 other provinces. However, IIRC Jdobbin had confirmed in this and another thread that Doer does not speak French, which is a requirement as all Federal Leaders are able to converse in both official languages. On top of that, the NDP has made is Quebec breakthrough and maintained their beachhead through the last election. They have moved from .07% in 2000 up to 14% in 2008 and now polling in the 18% range. Layton has lead the NDP from 900,000 votes to 2.5 million and from 13 seats to 39 seats. All the while being criticised and put down by media and LPC and CPC supporters. However, I don't know Doers age. Jack Layton can be around for 1 or 2 more election cycles. And truthfully WildBill. It doesn't matter who leads the Federal NDP, you are unlikely to vote for them as well. So, if this Doer is of the calibre that some here suggest, and there is Federal potential, perhaps he needs to use this time to learn our other official language. Then who knows what happens.
