Yesterday sitting NDP Premier Darrell Dexter was the First Premier of NS to March in a Pride Parade. What a great day for equality.

Considering what some of the NDP's views were not too long ago.

http://www.canada.com/ottawa/story.html?id...78-268ca6bb3ba5

While the candidacy of former governor general and Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer had NDP apparatchiks high-fiving this week, observers might wonder how his past views on the subject of gay rights will play with some party members. As Canada's high commissioner to Australia in 1987, Mr. Schreyer told reporters that homosexuality is "an affliction" and an "abnormal tendency."

"In my opinion, if allowed to become too visible in society, it cannot help but have a negative and detrimental effect on the younger generation," he said. Earlier this year, fellow Manitoban Bev Desjarlais was stripped of her critic duties after running against the NDP line on same-sex marriage, and later lost her nomination. But Mr. Schreyer's remarks on homosexuality are old views, say the New Democrats.

Apologists for the guy.

Is it any wonder why he didn't win?

Thanks for showing us some political parties progress while others live in the past. This should not be an attack on the NDP but a celebration for a provincial first. good for Darrel Dexter and his NDP for leading the way.

You made this about the NDP. Just pointing out that Layton asked one of the most prominent NDPers of all time to run last time who just wanted to put his past comments behind him. Well, the electorate didn't seem to to think that he had elaborated enough on those comments.

It is about the NDP being the First in NS to support gay rights. You are making this about comments made in a province 2000km away, and a time which was 20 years ago.

You should be happy Dobbin I hear Scott Brison was there too, he wasn't leading leading the parade or even on the gay pride website like Mr. Dexter was but that seem fair becuase Mr. Dexter seems very popular in NS. For taking stands like this quite often, he isn't a one trick pony.

This was in a recent federal election where the NDP chose a candidate who just wanted people to ignore his remarks.

Shame on Layton for letting it go unresolved.

Now maybe you can ask Doer to the do the same in Manitoba.

Yeah there are all kinds of crazy Candidates that run.

I agree. Did the Liberal leader go to the pride fest this year? I didn't see him there.

That hurt the NDP from making gains in the city of Winnipeg.

I have no idea if the Liberal leader was in attendance. Do they list all the participants?

Indeed. this isn't that big of a deal. Someone walks in a parade and were celebrating. We should treat this as a regular thing nothing special.

Accept it is something special. The parade has been going on for 30 years and this is the first time a sitting Premier has marched in it, becuase the other two parties were too full of intolerance to accept their invites in years past. Progress my friends it is a great thing and a big deal.

When I saw the title I thought perhaps the NDP made a proposal that made sense.

They do that quite a lot actually. Like taking the tax of home electric bills that the Liberals and Conservatives put on. This will help the working poor most of whom live in small apartments and heat their homes in the winter with electricity. Or how about getting rid of all union, and bisuness donations to political parties and just have individuals donate to campaigns. I can't wait too see what this government is going to do. They have already stimulated the building market by offering a tax rebate.

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, the love that for years dared not speak its name is now the love that won't shut up!

I'm getting really tired of EVERYBODY being SPECIAL!

Especially for what are trivial reasons.

Race and sexual orientation are irrelevant in a modern world.

Who cares?

If you're stranded on a desert island, being gay or straight matters SFA when all you really care about is having someone with you smart enough to build a radio out of coconuts!

If all they can do is make something 'pretty' out of coconuts then they are not much help to survival, no matter what their race or inclinations.

What are you talking about this is not about being special it is about a show of numbers and support in a Province which is not known for its progressive mindset for those who dare to live their lives in a non conventional way. Your post only shows their needs to be more of these tolerance tests.

Like I said, NDP proposals that make sense are a rare as the baffin island penguin. "member when the wanted to nationaize the banks? Cluless Clowns all of them.

Well, perhaps that's where we differ. When it comes to my beliefs, I don't care about the numbers!

Having large numbers of people agree or disagree with me has never determined my own idea of what is right or wrong. I found prejudice to be illogical nearly 50 years ago, long before it became 'trendy'.

The problem with needing people to agree with you is that it's a two-edged sword. People can also be dead wrong! Worse yet, they can be very cruel and unfair while being blissfully unaware of doing it!

Just look at the spectacle of some of our Human Rights Commissions. Or how the Americans treat any black Republican. Or even some white Republicans!

"What's your sign?" "Have you consulted the I Ching?"

I'm afraid I don't share that insecurity.

What are you talking about are you a gay man? Can you hold your partners hand in public with out people yelling FAG at you? You don't get to pretend you live a hard life when people aren't saying "I don't mind gays as long as they don't act gay in public." That is considered tolerance. This is the one day a year they can be open in public and people can't say anything because they will look like the minority. Sorry tolerance escapes you.

What are YOU talking about? When did I say that I care one way or another about two men holding hands? When did I say I care about gays acting gay in public?

Tolerance to me is an individual thing. These things aren't a problem for me. I actually don't really care much for ANY parades, although I will admit to getting a thrill up myspine everytime I hear the bagpipe bands.

It just seems that every day is SOME minority group's SPECIAL day! I don't consider anyone special, including myself.

People are people, period. As the actor who portrays Admiral Adama says in the tv show Battlestar Galactica, "There is only ONE race, the HUMAN race! And so say we all!"

I don't believe that I personally am being intolerant. If someone IS being intolerant, I say just hang 'em and let's move on! If someone commits a hate crime against someone else, we can always use more organ donations.

We all have more important things to do than wallow in insecurity and self-pity. Hopefully, a thousand years from now no one will know or care about racial or sexual prejudice.

Unless of course, we keep constantly refreshing it!

See here is the point you think they are asking to be treated special but that is not true at all they are asking to be treated the same. They want to go out on the street and be able to kiss like any other couple with out people stopping and staring, whispering, or shouting Fag at them. They get that one day a year. It is when they come out they hold hands and they get to march with their heads held high saying I am gay, these are my friends and family who know I am gay and are ok with and if you don't like well too bad because right now I am no longer the minority. It is obvious to me you don't get it, and that is fine try being non conventional for one day you might feel differently.

it's obvious to me that YOU don't get it! If you and your partner want to kiss on the street I would NOT stop and stare! I wouldn't consider it that big a deal. Do what you want!

Am I supposed to feel responsible for what OTHER people do? God, I'd spend my entire life walking around in a guilt trip, 24/7! Forget that! Let other people feel guilty for their OWN actions!

It's not holding hands or kissing that bothers me. It's constantly beating some damn drum!

I never said you would. I am saying it does happen and if you ignore that fact then you are just as bad as those who do it. That is why there is a gay pride parade for the community to say "we are gay, and want you to know it." Someday people wont care and their wont need to be a parade, but right now that is not true. You are sick of people being treated as if they are "special", I am sick of people being treated as if they are different.

Why am I "just as bad" for something someone ELSE does? Collective guilt? Screw that!

I have enough trouble trying to live my own life properly and atoning for my own sins. I don't feel the slightest shred of guilt for someone else's transgressions. I am an individual, not a 'number' or a member of a tribe.

Maybe if we ALL worried about our own character you would have less to be upset about!

Yes lets all turn a blind eye to the wrongs of society and turn a blind eye. That is how you bring about tolerance and acceptance.
