jdobbin Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Crime+ac...2057/story.html Crime continued to decline in Canada in 2008 following a five-year trend, according to a report released Tuesday by Statistics Canada.Crimes, including robberies, break-ins and car thefts dropped in almost every province, with the largest declines in Manitoba (down 14 per cent). The notable exception was Prince Edward Island where police reported crimes increased by seven per cent. There was a slight increase in homicides across the country, with the highest incidence in the western provinces, and Toronto. Montreal and Hamilton both reported their lowest homicide rate since 1981. The trend continues downward. The trick now will be head off crime before it happens. In some cases, it means prevention such as reducing still unacceptable numbers of fetal alcohol syndrome cases. As many provinces have found, the level of FAS in criminal behaviour cases is quite significant. In other cases, it means better security measures. And by security, that could mean places where abused men, women, children can go to escape domestic violence. It can can also mean a safety audit to try and come up with measures to deter crime such as better lighting, better sightlines, CCTV, security patrols, safety walks and locks and security systems for home and vehicles. There won't be just one answer to the question of reducing crime. The main focus has been on police, trials and imprisonment. That has helped address things after a crime has happened. We still need to do more to try and keep a crime from ever happening in the first place. Quote
Muddy Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Murder rate would be much higher if our medical personal did not have experiences now with gun shot wounds. They save a lot of lives in the Big Smoke.. Quote
jdobbin Posted July 21, 2009 Author Report Posted July 21, 2009 Murder rate would be much higher if our medical personal did not have experiences now with gun shot wounds. They save a lot of lives in the Big Smoke.. That is very true. However, we also have fewer shootings and knifings as well. Quote
Smallc Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Right, and if we hadn't found out about antibiotics, a great many more people would die of infection. Things are as they are. Quote
