The cable and satellite companies have been ordered to contribute 1.5 per cent of their gross broadcasting revenues to the local programming fund, an increase of 0.5 per cent. I think that for people concerned about media concentration in large markets like Toronto, this is an important step. Many of the struggling local TV stations are in Tory ridings and many people would not be happy losing a local TV news service. Why can't we allow our private TV stations to succeed or fail based on their own merits, rather than funding them like this? The cable and satellite companies will of course pass on their extra costs to consumers. Probably because there is no economic reason for any Canadian television. I have a satellite for watching TV and I pay around 113.00 monthly and within that I HAD also paid to watch the government of Ontario until last Fall when Starchoice , now Shaw ,took that away from me. So If I have to pay another $10 to watch local news and other programs, at least I'm being able to have that choice.
