Topaz Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 It seen Hamilton Steel, own now by US Steel are calling 800 workers back to work. Why? Ontario law says if workers are layoff for more than 35 weeks they have to get severance pay. This will cost US Steel 15 million and so they probably will get the workers working for s short time and then lay them off again! http://www.thestar.com/news/ontario/article/650326 Quote

US STEEL could return the contracts and work they took out of both Hamilton and Nanticoke and keep most of the employees working and sever off the rest. But because they have basically shut down two operations, in near entirety, in order to move the newly aquired contracts to the US, they got caught with having to deal with severance costs for almost an entire workforce with 25+ years. However, I think you are right. They are going to call them back for a number of weeks, have them paint lines, shovel sand, and lay them off again. Quote
