August1991 Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 It was always going to be the case he was going to present: Blame the Opposition and claim confidence. Harper has made a tactical error that will deny him a majority.Harper met the the three opposition leaders to ask for their confidence. None gave it to him.If the GG wants formal proof, then she can convene parliament and ask for a confidence vote. Dion cannot continue this game of supporting the government by abstaining when he chooses. Harper has called Dion's bluff and Dion walked into the trap. Quote
jdobbin Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 Harper met the the three opposition leaders to ask for their confidence. None gave it to him. That isn't a defeated government. Dion has been claiming no confidence in the government since he became leader. Harper is going through contortions to say what he did was a confidence vote. It wasn't. If the GG wants formal proof, then she can convene parliament and ask for a confidence vote. She won't do that because the legislation doesn't require it. If Harper was honest, he would have put that in the legislation that a government could call its own confidence vote. He didn't. Dion cannot continue this game of supporting the government by abstaining when he chooses. Harper has called Dion's bluff and Dion walked into the trap. Of course he can do it. Harper did it 19 times. Quote
nbguyca Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I cannot think of any good, legitimate reasons for having an election. This is nothing more than a political move on Harper's part. (Didn't he once say he would get rid of all these type of actions because Canadians were tired of them.) A waste of time and a waste of money but once again we see that Harper rules with a iron fist and it is his way or the highway. Quote
