I think it comes dangerously close to saying "yes, violence is horrible but you can understand how angry they must be".

So? There's nothing wrong with attempting to understand why things happen at a level other than "they're just evil/hate our freedoms." You might disagree, but surely you can recognize that lien of reasoning is not in and of itself an apology for the act.

By the way: did you see this?

Frantic Hindu devotees desperately battled to revive people trampled and crushed in a stampede at an historic temple that left at least 168 worshippers dead.

Television images taken outside the temple located in a 15th Century fort in the city of Jodhpur showed police and onlookers using blankets to carry out the injured and dead. Laying them down on the pavement, people struggled to revive those who had been hurt, pressing their chests and slapping their faces. Other victims were dragged out by the feet or arms. Small children were seen sitting next to the corpses of their parents, crying in anguish.

Officials fear the death toll could yet reach 200. The exact cause of the stampede that left at least another 100 people injured was tonight unclear.

...

Tragically, fatal stampedes at temples in India are not an uncommon experience. Earlier this summer many children were among the 145 people killed at a crush at the Naina Devi temple in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh. In 2005, about 265 pilgrims were killed in a stampede near a temple in the western state of Maharashtr.

What does this say about Hindus' capacity for "violence on a mass or sickening scale"?

Rare enough to attract notice.

  • The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Rue, this may come as a shock to you, but I don't see Israel as some evil entity who is the root cause of all the violence that it begets. I'm sure you also see some of Israel's actions as counter-effective, yet I've never seen you criticise Israel.

Please stop throwing my name out there in you "xyz says Israel is poo" rants. I do not see Israel as the sole irresponsible player in the game, no am I under some preconceived notion that all will be well if only the occupied territories are given back and the walls are torn down.

1. No its not a shock I read your posts.

2. Yes I have criticized Israel on this forum many times for actions I thought were adding to the problem or I thought counter-productive-quite a few times actually.

3.I don't throw your name about in Israel is poo rants. If I have criticized your positions I have been very clear to state why and if you read them I have never suggested you are evil or closed minded, lol. But now that we are on the topic, you are a communist swine. Just joking!

4. Unlike some of the other persons from the political spectrum you appear to come from, I find you refreshingly fair and open-minded and respect very much what you said above and in past posts. I try make an effort to tell you when I agree with you too and why.

5. For example, when I made that I agree with BC comment, it was a kind of back handed complement. You should have written back and said of course I do I am finally beginning to gain some common sense by listening to you.

7. I have a problem of not laughing at myself so yes when I ask others to I appreciate I am a sanctimonious bozo for saying so.

8. On this current issue, the thing I think most of us from any perspective have on this kind of discussion is that generalizing an entire people because of the negative behaviour of people within its community or society or group inevitably and necessarily leads to the inciting of intolerance.

9. Besides BC Chick, we all know all men are idiots. Oops I did it.
