Leafless Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) Prime Minister Stephen Harper painted himself as a Quebec nationalist today as he took part in annual Fete Nationale celebrations. http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/448481 I never thought I would see an English speaking PM paint himself as a Quebec nationalist while ignoring the more important concept of Canadian nationalism. When is the last time you have heard a federal politician identify himself/herself as a Canadian nationalist or one that believes in Canadian nationalism? Nationalism creates an identity. Lord Durham thought so. If we wish to prevent the extension of this (US) influence, it can only be done by raising up for the North American colonist some nationality of his own; by elevating these small and unimportant communities into a society having some objects of a national importance; and by thus giving their inhabitants a country which they will be unwilling to see absorbed even into one more powerful." - Governor General of British North America Lord Durham (1839) http://www.unitednorthamerica.org/nationalism.htm Edited June 25, 2008 by Leafless Quote
Fortunata Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 This PM would say anything and do anything short of selling his own children to get a majority. This is why what he says and does is not trusted as what he really believes. It's really all quite slimy. Quote
