Shakeyhands Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 What is going on with this case? Why has the Government done nothing and then lied to us about it? http://www.canada.com/cityguides/winnipeg/...c1d&k=94465 http://www.cbc.ca/cp/world/080215/w0215132A.html I'd like to know why nothing has been done to assist this woman and why, when asked, Helena Guergis lied about contacting Ms Miller to the tune of 75 times. What the hell is wrong with these people????? Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche
Borg Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 (edited) She is not a personal friend of the trudeau, mulroney or montreal "elite" clan. She is likely white and does not have a lot of money. She does not have political pull within her own community. Or something else. I am sure there are many people incarcerated around the world who do not have the support of the canadian government. But we make a point of rescuing canadians of convenience in the middle east. The world is not a place where all are treated equally. More proof that mexico is not as safe as it once seemed. Are you doing anything? Borg Edited February 18, 2008 by Borg Quote
Shakeyhands Posted February 18, 2008 Author Report Posted February 18, 2008 in fact yes, I sent an email to the PMO as well as my local MP. Its quite unbelievable the way this poor woman has been abandoned. Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche
Keepitsimple Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Shakey - where is your source for Ms. Guergis lying about contacting Brenda Martin 75 times? It seems that this is indeed a case where our consulate has dropped the ball. As the article from a couple of weeks ago shows, Guergis only recently took over responsibility for Consular Affairs. After rightly being hammered by the opposition, she seems to have taken responsibility and personally flew to Mexico to meet with the higher-ups. Guergis in Mexico on behalf of jailed Canadian'Justice' Sought Charles Rusnell, Canwest News Service Published: Saturday, February 02, 2008 EDMONTON - Federal Cabinet Minister Helena Guergis flew to Mexico earlier this week for a series of top-level meetings with government officials to try to expedite the release of a Canadian woman imprisoned without trial for nearly two years. Ms. Guergis, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, pressed Mexican officials to rule immediately on the case of former Trenton, Ont., native Brenda Martin. Senior Canadian officials also told the Mexicans that Canada would be prepared to accept Ms. Martin immediately if she were extradited. "What we demanded is that justice be served," said Jeffrey Kroeker, the spokesman for Ms. Guergis. Ms. Guergis met with Mexican Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora and Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa in Mexico City on Monday and with state officials in Guadalajara on Tuesday, Mr. Kroeker said. Ms. Guergis's diplomatic trip follows weeks of negative publicity in which Ms. Martin's supporters and Liberal foreign affairs critic Dan McTeague hammered the Minister, who recently assumed responsibility for consular affairs, for failing to ensure Ms. Martin's legal and human rights were respected. Shakeyhands Posted February 18, 2008 Author Report Posted February 18, 2008 (edited) I actually saw it on CBC on one of the Sunday morning shows, the CBC Reporter met Ms. Guergis at a Canadian Tire event, Ms. Guergis promised to meet them after the event to discuss the case. Ms. Guergis actually ended up leaving before the CT event and not meeting with the CBC reporter as she committed to, the next day the CBC received a letter from Ms. Guergis stating that consular staff had met with Ms. Miller upwards of 75 times. When told of the letter Ms. Miller broke down and said NO ONE from the Gov't or Consul had ever met with her. Seems maybe the show was taped before the 2nd of Feb? Shakeyhands Posted February 18, 2008 Author Report Posted February 18, 2008 btw, highliting that Ms. Guergis recently took over the post doesnt' excuse her or her predecessor for their inaction. Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche
Wilber Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 I saw it as well. More to the point, if she wasn't contacted, what the hell is wrong with our so called diplomats? Too busy drinking cocktails with the local in crowd to look after their own citizens? If in fact they did visit this woman, those visits should have been recorded, both by the Embassy and the prison. The Embassy refused to speak with the reporter and there was no mention of whether they asked prison officials if there were visits by Canadian officials. Are the bureaucrats at fault here or is this another of Day's not interfering on behalf of Canadians in so called "democratic countries that act according to the rule of law", whatever the hell that means? This needs to be got to the bottom of, any of us could be next. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC

This needs to be got to the bottom of, any of us could be next. The conservative's are not real good at protecting Canadians. As I'm typing this our government is planning to extradite (send away to a foriegn jail) Marc Emery and his two employess to the US for selling Cannabis seeds online. The crime nets a 200 dollar fine in Canada, America wants to imprison them for 30 years to life. This government is a total failure at protecting Candians. The police that co-operated with the American DEA are traitors, as is the justice minister if he does not refuse extradition. In fact any government that would make seeds or plants illegal, is corrupt and in contempt of the Creator. Quote
Keepitsimple Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 I'm a Conservative supporter (at this time) but the information that I've seen tells me that our Mexican Consulate really dropped the ball. Keep in mind though - whether it's a Conservative, Liberal, or NDP government - we're at the mercy of the competence of our Consulate staff. In general, they are civil service and often survive from one government to the next. Having said that, perhaps it's time for a review of how our consulates operate to see if there is a better way of providing oversight - some sort of periodic review - so that Canadians to not languish for extended periods of time without proper and continuous representation. If in fact, our consultae blatantly lied to Ms. Guergis about visting Brenda Martin 75 times - then someone deserves to be fired. Quote Back to Basics
Shakeyhands Posted February 19, 2008 Author Report Posted February 19, 2008 Maybe she met with someone on this junket... http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/mexico-city/n...ws080129-en.asp Ambassador Rishchynski seems to be a career diplomat who should be recalled and asked to appear before parliament to explain himself. http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/mexico-city/g...hchynski-en.asp Quote "They muddy the water, to make it seem deep." - Friedrich Nietzsche
