CandianWatcher Posted December 21, 2007 Report Posted December 21, 2007 Border Guards should be armed, period. In saying that, every person given a gun needs to pass the same stringent type of testing as anyone applying for a position as a Police Officer. A customs official has more power than a police officer, I for one, would hold that the border patrol officer be at least as well trained in firearm use but also other policing methods as well. Considering some of the border guards I have met....I dont think I want half of them to have a gun. They already seem angry enough having that job, give em a gun? Not for me thanks. But that may just be the problem. Perhaps those in the know have figured out that there personnel are not able to get a l;icence or be able to shoot effectively. At the border they may have power above a cop, but on the whole? I can't think so....once they are away from the border then they are like you and me. They would need a cop to do any arrest etc , I suppose a citizens arrest, but those are fraught with dangers, and thats why people dont do it. Quote

The same could be said for some of the US border people I have met and they have always had guns but I don't recall them ever shooting some innocent bozo on Canadian border. Same goes for the rangers in many US state parks. There is no reason our border people can't be trained up to police standard for using firearms and for those who can't make the grade, they will have to find some other position for them than border duty.
