Protest Greets the Opening of an Arabic School in New York

This is within a public school, not a private. Isn't this the same idea as put forward by John Tory. I'm amazed that this would happen in a public school system.

The biggest school system in the United States began the new school year today by opening its doors to controversy, as New York City introduced the first public Arabic school in the nation.

It was, to put it mildly, an unusual first day of school for the 60 students at the Khalil Gibran International Academy, where students arrived to see press and police outside the new school, as those who oppose the school fear it will spread radical Islam.

"When I came down the corner and saw the mobile police unit and the news cameras swirling around, then I was very nervous," said Susan O'Grady, a parent of a student at the school.

Ah a Madrassa in the Middle of NYC, hows that for scary. No doubt financed and paid for by Saudi Arabia, I wonder will girls be allowed to attend classes with boys? Will the usual text books describe Jews as pigs and infidels as dogs? Bush sends troops to die in Iraq, supposedly fighting radical Islamist and he allows a Madrassa to be build and run in the US. There should be no such thing as a "religious schools" -- paid for by taxpayers.

People should not be forced into paying for someone's religious upbringing.

Want religion teachings in your child's life? Send them to your church/mosque/synagog/cave/wherever or pay for private school -- as long as said private school is open to public scrutiny. Private or not, they are still teaching kids and we need to know what these kids are being taught IMO.

Right. Thank you for pointing out that race is not the same as religion. Therefore you'll have no qualms if a Caucasian-only school opens up in your neighbourhood. It's fun watcjing you lefties get all tangled up in your various opposing hypocrisies.

So , since that suggests students come from all walks, white black green, muslim, arabic ,girls and boys, you want to compare that to a "whites only " school?

Because I was addressing your post, in which you made the claim that not all Arabs are Muslims, which is making the claim that race is not religion. Further, you were defending the school on that basis, apparently under the mistaken impression that defending it under one set of criteria is much the same as defending it under another, as long as it is defended.

No I was pointing out how the poster could not be more wrong. She claimed that it was a madrassa, speculated they would teach jews are pigs, and that because they bomb Iraq that this school is hypocrtical.

As for defence of the school, where did I defend it?

To angus, I dont know. Have to ask the NY school board why. Perhaps to teach arabic customs and language ? They will have to follow a NY State corriculum, so I fail to see a problem with one school in a city of more than 10 million people.
