a tale of two cities: calgary and edmonton
CandianWatcher replied to aceman's topic in Local Politics in Canada
No, they are rolled up at eight o'clock at night, except when the Stampede is on, they are left out until eight thirty! -
Bad guys use guns to kill people, lets get rid of the guns, period, oh why we are at it, more people are killed by cars, so lets get rid of cars too. The gun registry is a tax on hard working law abiding citizens, it does nothing to curb some one killing with a gun, the bad guys don't register a gun before they use it, the hand gun registry is proof of that.

October 2007 monthly deficit cause for alarm?
CandianWatcher replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Has anyone really figured out how much money they will get in these tax breaks, or have you even asked if we would have been better off as a society forgetting these tax breaks right now and help kids with their tuition fees, Harper could have taken the opportunity to introduce measures to adjust seniors' pensions to help those seniors who have to decide about what to buy, hydro or food. Nothing was done about investing in home care for seniors. Nothing was done to help seniors pay for drugs. Nothing was mentioned about transferring money into social programs to help at least 12,000 people who are living on the streets in BC , God knows how many across Canada, because they can't afford housing. A 1% GST tax cut or an income tax cut that only applies to a higher tax bracket means very little. It likely will not even cover the increase in home heating oil or hydro costs this year. For Seniors on low income, it means nothing. Not only will oil and gas companies get big tax cuts, they also continue to get the estimated $1.4 billion in subsidies. We use to have a decent size middle class in this country, we now are getting to be those who have and those who have not. I could think of hundreds of different ways of doing society some good than giving tax breaks to multi national corporations, but then why should I care, I will take my tax break and run. -
October 2007 monthly deficit cause for alarm?
CandianWatcher replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You are suggesting that the Tories are more honest! The Tory government is in deficit for October based on the tax cuts. I know people are trying to spin it differently but there it is., Not quite, you forget the part about tax cuts to Corporations. They are the ones winning big time in these tax cuts. -
I don't know if doing away with National borders is a good thing. The Europeans gave up a lot to get to the stage they are now, nationally speaking. I am not sure I would want to see the same thing happen in North America.

"Why does this government want to repeal the Gun licensing registry? Because it is "tough on crime?" How is that helpful? It sounds like more American-style ideas coming from our current government, who show in so many ways now their intentions to make Canada's laws the same as in the United States?" I can answer that question for you, so far it has been a great big waste of a lot of money. So far the only people who have registered the long guns since this white elephant was set up are the law abiding citizens of this country. Now if we could just find a way to make the bad guys comply with the registry, we would know who was using what gun. The gun registry has done nothing to alleviate crime, it was brought in as another piece of photo op legislation allowing the politician to look like they were cracking down on crime, when in fact the only ones that they penalized by this law was the law abiding citizen. The days the bad guys start to use a registered long gun in the commission of a crime, then there will be the need of a registery. In fact, most crimes are committed with hand guns and they have been registered for years. I don't side with this Conservative government on many issues, they are far to right for me, but on this issue they are "right on"

The right not to be offended?
CandianWatcher replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Growing pot is not dangerous? Man you have been smoking too much of what your growing. Tell the citizens who live next to a grow up that it is not dangerous, when drug dealers, users, or bad people burst into their home and scare the crap out of them, just because they got the wrong house. Tell the people in the neighborhood that have to live with the drive by shootings that growing pot is not dangerous. Yes, right tell me living next to a grow op is not dangerous, tell the land lord that has his house condemned because it housed a grow op that it is not dangerous. Now back to the original topic of this thread, Free speech comes with responsibilities, you cannot just say anything you want under the guise of free speech. You have to be responsible for your words, just like your actions. If you don't like me, say so in plain English, If you don't like me there is no reason to add on racial expletives to get the point across. That is what free speech is. The right to say what you chose in a responsible manner. Too many times too many forget that part of free speech. Responsibility. -
Some Canadians border guards quit
CandianWatcher replied to Topaz's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Border Guards should be armed, period. In saying that, every person given a gun needs to pass the same stringent type of testing as anyone applying for a position as a Police Officer. A customs official has more power than a police officer, I for one, would hold that the border patrol officer be at least as well trained in firearm use but also other policing methods as well. -
Er, yes

Because the man is innocent and innocent, free men should have the right to travel. Ever since 9/11 people have given up more rights for "security". In fact what you are giving up is your freedoms to get in return a false sense of security. Put it into proportion, you have a higher risk of being killed in your every day life routine, by bus, truck, car, accident of some sort than by a terrorists. Do you really think giving up all your freedoms in the name of security is really worth the price?

I believe a Harper majority would be a disaster for this country. With Harper as the head of the "Conservative" party the party itself has left the Red Tories without a home. Like myself, most red Tories find that the party Harper leads is too far right and radical for our comfort. The Progressive Canadian Party was formed in 2003 in reaction to the merger of the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties. Now Jim Love, former Progressive Canadian Party president, jumped ship to the Liberals in mid-November. Love's reason for jumping to the Liberals, Dionsvision is the same as the Red Tories, More and more Red Tories are going to find a home in the Liberal party as under Dion the Liberals of today hold the Progressive Conservative ideals we’ve had for years. The defection of some major Tories to the Liberals has been overlooked by the "old boy netowork" news media in this country. I do not expect the Conservatives under Harper to get a majority government.

We pay while Indians live in luxury
CandianWatcher replied to geoffrey's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Before you condemn the government for looking after a Natives you should read some of the history of the Natives in Canada, the treaties and agreements. You will find that we as a country have a legal obligation to do this. -
Starbucks is a great company, a friend of mine works there and has done for years, they seem to promote from within and look after their own. Mind you that being said, must admit I am more of a Tim Horton coffee drinker.

Why all the sour comments about the leftard propaganda and stupid ideology. When people use the terms left as you have used them I already know they have no argument worthwhile to support their views except as a leftist ideology. The far right ideology scares me more, On climate change leading by example is something Canadian leaders, Prime Minister Harper and his environmental Minister do not know how to do. John Baird, Canada's Environmental Minister did not show any leadership in anyway, he did not put forth any workable solutions, or acceptable proposals onto the table. Both Harper and Baird decided to fuse themselves to the USA . (the reason this was done as to keep the policies of the USA and Canada the same on environmental policies to help ease the way with deep integration of North America) It was only by the leadership of the Environmental Minister from Indonesia that the conference was able to move forward after he proposed dropping the explicit mention of targets and numbers. I do not believe in the theory of man made global warming, what I do believe is what I see, more and more people being affected by disease of the lung. Just for that reason alone we need to lower emissions. I live in a region that in the summer now has a white cloud hanging in the valley, it is formed from the back tailpipes of all those cars running up and down this highly populated valley. Our far right wing government in BC and the transportation crown corporation is in the midst of buying 20 hydrogen-powered buses and is planning fueling stations in Langford outside Victoria and in Whistler, where the fleet will be used during the 2010 Winter Olympics. The plan calls for BC to purchase hydrogen from Air Liquid Canada Inc. for the next six years to the tune of $20 million. These buses are planned to be used in the 2010 Olympic transportation plan. The province and B.C. Transit will spend $89 million for the 20 hydrogen buses. That works out to nearly $4.5 million per bus. Trans-link recently bought diesel-electric hybrids for $750,000. Now to put that into context, for the same amount of money spent on 20 hydrogen buses, the province could have in invested the money and got close to 120 regular buses added to the transit fleet in the lower mainland. This would allowed a lot of commuters to have gotten out of their cars and onto the buses. They could have set up a regular service running down the entire Fraser Valley for the money they have invested in these twenty hydrogen buses. Imagine what a hundred and twenty buses running a regular schedule down the Fraser Valley between Abbotsford and Vancouver would have done to alleviate the amount of grid lock and emissions coming from all those single occupant cars. On top of this right wing stupidity thinking comes the information that the hydrogen fuel will have to be transported across Canada to Vancouver and BC signed a six year deal to have that done. They argue, even with the transportation of the fuel they will have lower emissions from these buses. I argue, if we took this money and invested it into regular buses we could get a lot of people out of single occupancy vehicles, cut down on congestion, pollution and the need to keep building roads and bridges and the total carbon imprint would be a lot less than operating 20 hydrogen buses. Politicians will spend a lot of money on projects that give them photo ops but really when scrutinized do not make sense in the long run. Left, right or down the middle, the environmental issue is on the front burner and we need politicians to take concrete actions to solve it. Throwing money into 20 buses as the Campbell government did is a waste and does nothing to solve the problem that we have in this area.

An ex-smoker of thirty five years, quit on the day my son was brought home from the hospital. Trying to ban smoking in public places is one thing. Banning it in someone's "personal space", is another. If you can ban people from smoking in a car because you are transporting children, then what is stopping the state from coming into your home and banning smoking in the home if a child is present. I see the government as two faced on this issue, they bring in all types of laws to ban smoking, making life difficult for a smoker but love to collect the tax money off of the product. I have just finished raising two kids and bringing them through the school years. The government and people have more to worry about than second hand smoke in our kids lives, the amount of illegal substance that kids have ready access to is unbelievable. Quit worrying about the small stuff and focus on what really can kill them. Illegal Drugs.
