Because to all intents and purposes, he was the Republican Party candidate. The Republicans were never going to pose a serious threat to the Dems in Connecticut, but no Republican voter would want a hardened leftie like Lamont in the Senate.

I was thinking of the broader issues of decriminalizing for adults and making it a crime for youth. I think that's a principle pretty well established, though, surely, with tobacco and alcohol? The only question is what age you set the level at.
