Steve-O. Yes, that's it! The Harperites are running their own version of political "Jackass" movie!

Questioning the relevance of the UN is kind of un-American. The US drove the creation of the UN, and recently we have seen the US administration turning there to address the NK nuke 'crisis'. Shurely America wouldn't do that if it were as bad an orgsnization as you suggest!

[Come to think of it, it was getting boring around here anyway ... same old rightwingers suffering from argument impairment spouting the same old discredited lies and attacking people whenever they feel like it. ]

Harper gov't involved in Senate smear?
Figleaf replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It's not much surprise to see the PMO importing Karl-Rove-style scorched-earth politics into Canada. Admiration for destructived ruthlessness runs deep in the neo-tory psyche, as does hatred and contempt for Canadian institutions. This operates hand-in-hand with a total lack of any sense of the boundaries of respect or fair play to produce these types of blunders. Consider just the recent record now before us: -unsupported accusation of breaching confidences levelled against Garth Turner; -Peter Mackay calls Belinda a dog; -Harper fallaciously calls Liberals anit-Israel; -and now this specious assault on senators trying to do their jobs. This is a pattern of behaviour that reveals the rue mean-spirited, self-serving nature of Harperite thinking that most Canadians will never support. -
Can we separate Morality from Religion? (Poll)
Figleaf replied to Electric Monk's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
So, basically, you are seeking that Canada become a feudal vassal to the papacy. Remarkable notion. Good luck with that. Exactly. Glad we agree. -
happy now greg?

Presumably the people who object to seeing Madonna hang on a cross would also object to the re-enactments of the crucifiction conducted in the Phillipines each year. Odd that we don't see too many complaints about that, don't you think?

Can we separate Morality from Religion? (Poll)
Figleaf replied to Electric Monk's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Exactly. And this is why condescending minority beliefs such as yours will never be taken seriously by those of the MAJORITY Christian religion, also a believe, my dear man. Absurd. WHICH "majority" Christian religion? And you're still quite beside the point anyway ... what makes the religious belief that murder is wrong moral while a non-religious belief that murder is wrong is not moral? You should just admit you have no answer and move on. -
Objective observer? What? Who? Who's to say what's 'objective'? We had no documented cases of planets beyond Saturn either, until someone documented them. ... the notion of people with crystals on sticks changing the weather or acquiring super-powers by sleeping in a tin-foil box seems completely bonkers. Seeming completely bonkers (to you) scarcely rises to the level of thorough refutation. (I'm not being difficult just for the sake of it... I'm trying to make a point about the nature of proof and belief.) Yes,... the nature of a conspiracy does imply a confrontation between the insider's desire for secrecy and the outsider's desire to puncture it. Perhaps this confrontation is appealing for some participants. Yes, that sounds creditable as well. We're making progress here now.

Can we separate Morality from Religion? (Poll)
Figleaf replied to Electric Monk's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
That's rich! My dear fellow -- you wouldn't know logic if it bit you in the ass. (We know this because we see it happen on the forum every day.) Here's an example. Logic should tell you that competing beliefs can't serve as a standard . ' Others would say that the Charter represented natural societal evolution. Nonsense. My question has nothing to do with Canada, or with any legislstion anywhere. What you are doing here is trying to sow confusion to disguise your inability to effectively address the issue. -
And yet when asked for specific examples of these confidentiality breaches Tory spokesmen could offer none.* How unusual, eh? ... Tory politicians making accusations without any back up. Where have we heard that before? (*today's Glob&Maul, p.A5.)

Bush the New Churchill, or, What Would World Be Like With Saddam?
Figleaf replied to jbg's topic in The Rest of the World
Can anyone explain what the choices in this poll even mean? Is English an unfamiliar language to the pollster here? Saddam was a danger to his own domestic enemies, and no-one else. -
Can we separate Morality from Religion? (Poll)
Figleaf replied to Electric Monk's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
It's like saying you have a university degree when you've never been inside a university. Morals are the same. Ahhh! I see... from the religious pov morality is a question of arbitrary definition. Okay. 1. What shred of evidence have you got ror that? 2. Woman A comes to you on the street and says 'Gee it's terrible what's happening to Israelis.' Later, Woman B meets you in an elevator and says 'Gosh it's terrible what's happening to Israelis.' Which one is the religious one? Excellent debate technique there. You look good now, don't you. -

Can we separate Morality from Religion? (Poll)
Figleaf replied to Electric Monk's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Whether or not you accept it, the accepted standards of human behavior relating to good and bad IMO are primarily propagated or taught by religion Oh, I accept that that is your opinion. But that doesn't help make any sense of why the same opinion is moral if held by one person but not by another. Say again? That last bit was too garbled for me to parse out your meaning. Even if that view were factaully precise (which it is not), it sheds no light on the question we are dealing with on this thread. So, I'm still looking for someone to exlpain how the same opinion can be moral in one person but not another. -

Taxing Poor Health (or Banning it)
Figleaf replied to geoffrey's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Auto insurance prices are unconscionable. If it were a free market, I'd say let them charge whatever the market would bear -- but it's NOT a free market. Insurance is mandatory if you want to drive on the public highways, ergo the government has a duty to ensure that the insurance providers are not taking advantage of the regulation to gouge customers. We pay our taxes for the roads -- we shouldn't be turned into feudal serfs in order to use them. -
You mean Liberal, don't you?
