Elton John denounces organized religion
MightyAC replied to theloniusfleabag's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Great point. Its just a continuation of the basic double standard long held by lefties. How is it different and what is the double standard apparently held by lefties? -
Hosting gay sports, doesn't pay

So you're saying that it is ok for heterosexuals to slap each other's asses but it's wrong for gay men? Are you also saying that it's somehow more acceptable for a straight QB to place his hands against the centers nuts but not a gay man?! I think your joke may be completely backwards…and we may want to start questioning the sexuality of athletes in general. YOu checked your sense of humour at the door on that one eh? Sheesh Sorry the tone of my post was came off harsh, I was added it quickly... I should have included a smiley.. The point was the joke attempt failed as the premise is the poster hoped there wasn't football as gay men would be in gay positions. My point was that straight men slap asses and touch nuts and then shower together afterwards...maybe we should be questioning the sexuality of all atheletes. -
So the CPC’s treatment of Garth Turner says a lot about what it really thinks about accountability and grass roots democracy. Clip from Garth's site.

At least you have a cabinet minister in your riding so you'll probably get a gift before the next election. Maybe some medical funding....I once had a fishing lure removed from my head in the Parry Sound hospital. I have a CPC back bencher in my riding. He has no power to represent us, submit private members bills or even talk to the press without permission. On occasion he appears on local radio to toe the party line. When the Emerson crossed the floor, Garth said that was wrong of us. I admired his honesty. My MP slammed the Fiberals and Belinda but then on local radio told us that Harper is a very smart man and the move, though controversial is in our best interest...one of those father knows best type speeches.

Age of Consent Hearings Moving Forward
MightyAC replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
5, 10, 50 posts in a row doesn’t make you anti-gay, your anti-gay comments do though. No, having concerns for youth don't make you a hateful lemming. However, if your hatred of homosexuals stems from your religious views then you may just be a lemming. Right I agree with 16, plus a close in age exemption. However in a previous post you asked "why don't EGALE come clean and explain why they don't want to raise the age to 16". I gave you their explanation and it's not a secret like you seem to imply. It took me 5 minutes to find an article explaining their position. It seems to me you like to accuse any politician or organization that lobbies on behalf of homosexuals as pedofiles. I'm not sure if it is part of Bill C-22 but the old law that forbids anal sex until the age of 18 should also be abolished. If that's not a part of the bill right now hopefully it is corrected in committee. -
Using a "per capita" statistic does not prove that point. Why not just simply measure the amount of pollution and divide it by our land mass????? Would that prove your point?? Why not just bend over and moon the whole world. Most of our country is empty but we pollute the hell out of the areas we inhabit. If you don’t think that is a problem then your plan to divide pollution by land mass is a great one. Seems like Homer Simpson logic to me though. Re: Simpson's episode 200 Homer is responsible for polluting Springfield so badly the town is forced to relocate 5 miles from its original location.
-
Per capita?!?!? What is that supposed to mean??? Such a figure is completely ridiculous. Canada barely has a population! If all of the people in Canada disappeared except you and I, per capita, you and I would be the greatest poluters in the entire universe. The point is we pollute like a country with a much larger population. Are you suggesting it is ok to be one of the dirtiest countries in the world per person simply because in total our pollution numbers are lower than larger nations?

Tories Spend for Transit Security
MightyAC replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
$37M in cameras and equipment may not be an effective deterrent to terrorism but it should help the existing officers fight crime in general. I would guess that surveillance systems help reduce muggings, assaults, vandalism, etc. -
I can understand why Con supporters would like to discredit Garth by comparing him to a woman having hissy fits, as his firing looks bad for the party. Garth embodied what the CPC pretended to be. He supports bottom up, grassroots democracy. He stands up for his constituents; he believes in accountability, transparency and honesty and then actually walks the walk. He also refuses to put the party ahead of the voters and become another silent party hack. I hate our current electoral system but if we had more politicians like Garth who actually do what they say and fight for their constituents it wouldn't be near as bad. Garth was sacked without an official reason. His office asked for written answers to 10 questions about his dismissal. The eventual answers prompted a letter to the PM and then the news conference today. Soon we'll all find out what Garth found out. I encourage CPC supporters, well supporters of all parties for that matter, to write their own MPs and encourage them to be more like Garth. I would think all people want their MPs to represent them first and the party second.

Help ensure a fair referendum in Ontario
MightyAC replied to MightyAC's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I'd say it brings out the best aspects of democracy. I'd also say that winner take all systems like ours really aren't democratic at all. Some people seem to have this delusion that the various PR systems would give fringe parties pollitical infulence. The truth is parties simply receive the same proportion of seats as votes they received. So parties receive the exact amount of influence hey deserve. If enough people support a party to achieve 4 or 5 percent of the vote that party is no longer on the fringe of society. -
Canadians really try hard to believe that because we're basically empty we're somehow clean and pristeen. Per capita we are one of the worst glutons and polluters in the develloped world. Well first of all CO2 is not a pollutant. I am really tired of this global warming clap-trap taking much needed attention away from POLLUTION. Especially air and water pollutants. Also conserving wildlife corridors. What a smoke screen this is. Unbelieveable waste of money. interesting op-ed on global warming: http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Columnists/Cor...14/2351620.html Maybe you quoted the wrong post. I didn't refer to CO2 or global warming.

Age of Consent Hearings Moving Forward
MightyAC replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
5 posts in a row wow Betsy you're really fired up. The tone of your posts seem to suggest that you're anti-gay...you're not one of those hateful lemmings are you Betsy? Now that the close in age exemption was added I am in favour of raising the age of consent. However, I can understand why EGALE and Svend are against the bill. First of all exploitive sex with anyone under 18 is already illegal, so our kids are already protected. Secondly, the teen years are a very hard time for gays. They have the same sexual urges and desires as the rest of us but often face humiliation, persecution and violence if they are outed. As a result many homosexuals do not become open about their sexual orientation until they are older, thus making it very hard for teen homosexuals to find partners. They argue that since young gays are often forced to seek relationships with people in their 20's the bill treats homosexuals unfairly. I can see their point but a line has to be drawn somewhere. I prefer the line to be drawn at 16. Too many stupid young teens think it's cool to be with someone older so this bill will help the situation. I believe it was Mulroney that actually lowered the age of consent to 14 in the first place so let's try to keep the partisanship to a minimum. I would also request that the gay bashing be turned down a bit but I realize some of the lemmings believe their God commands it. -

Elton John denounces organized religion
MightyAC replied to theloniusfleabag's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Elton is a gay man, a group of the population that has been demonized by religion, thus his comments are no surprise. I'd say they are a little inaccurate as some sects like the United and Anglican Churches and are quite accepting of homosexuals. He does have a point though. Many followers of an organized religion do act like hateful lemmings. There are several examples in this thread alone. I find it hard to believe that anyone could hate someone they don't even know simply because a few men said they should over a thousand years ago. Oh well as time goes on tolerance on specific issues does seem to improve. We can only hope that more hateful lemmings are dying off than being created. -
Garth will be holding a news conference tomorrow. He won't say exactly what it is about just that it is not about him becoming deputy leader of the Green Party or becoming a Lib. Base on his last couple of blog entries it sounds like it has something to do with how the PMO operates. Upon being turfed Garth's office asked for 10 answers in writing. Well he finally got a response and as a result he is making the trek back to Ottawa when parliament isn't even sitting to hold a pres conference. I hope this is good as I do like political excitement. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2006/11...2338769-cp.html

Age of Consent Hearings Moving Forward
MightyAC replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The bill is in committee and should be passed eventually. While in committee I really hope they take their time, cross all the t's and dot the i's. Poorly written laws are a nightmare for the courts. It would be a shame to rush the bill and then have perverts, who pray on children, get an easier ride than they deserve. -

MightyAC replied to MightyAC's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Right. So if a party receives only 5 or 6 percent of the vote they should only receive 5 or 6 percent of the seats...that way they do not receive anymore "legislative significance' than they deserve. Even if a party is well supported and receives 40 percent of the vote they should receive 40% of the seats. It would be undemocratic to reward or punish a party with any more or less seats than voters feel they should have. Bring on the Christian Heritage people and the Rhino party. There's always the Mary Jane Party or the Communist Party of Canada.. The 0.2% of the popular vote achieved by the Christian Heritage people wouldn't earn them a seat anyway. I am in favour of threshold of 4 or 5 percent of the popular vote before any representation should be created...unless of course they happen to win a riding. -

I agree completely. I would go one step further and say we also don't want a system that gives parties more seats than they actually deserve either. It's probably best to treat every vote and voter equally no matter which party it is for. The system should count every vote cast and give each party the same percentage of seats as the percentage of votes they achieved. -
Yes, of course it can support other cropscan - but what crop could possibly replace the extraordinary price of opium? Answer: none. You're missing my point... If your plan is for the west to burn the crop anyway it doesn't make sense to grow it in the first place. The price that any useful crop would fetch is of little consequence if the west replaces their income in the form of subsidies. Any useful food or cash crop would fetch some money for the farmer, be of use to the Afghan people and make sure the land is not being used for drug production.
-
If the soil can support poppies and cannabis couldn't it also support some food and cash crops? Your plan has farmers growing poppies and the west buying and burning them. In the end the farmers are wasting their time and we are simply handing them cash. A much better solution would be to subsidize the production of any useful crop. It would cost us less and be much more beneficial to the Afghan people.

Liberals poll even with Conservatives
MightyAC replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Don't even try to blame the Liberals for linking the CPC to the Bush admin. Conservatives were praising Dubya and calling the Libs anti-Bush long before the CPC even got into power. At the time Bush was popular now he is not. In hindsight it appears the CPC backed the wrong horse...but they made their bed so to speak.
