Exactly. And if you can warn them early enough, they can get home themselves and stay out of harm's way. I agree to both points. We should foot the bill to resuce anyone with a Canadian passport now stranded in Lebanon, whether they are a dual citizen or not. Now it's time to kibosh dual citizenry in Canada....but that's the topic of another board.

That is one of the stupidest things I've read all day. Try reading one your own posts.. I take it you're Catholic? -

When a leader completely backs one side right out of the gate doesn't that sort of ruin the diplomacy angle and get us involved? -

Western Liberal spam.. I'll admit I was a little slow until I realized the link pointed at the site and not the article...my re-post of the link goes straight to the Globe and Mail article. -

Harper & Israeli Invasion of Lebanon
MightyAC replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
How does my criticizing asinine (IMO and Lou Dobb’s as well) foreign policy make me "against the West" and in favour of communism or fascism? That's a pretty radical leap... In fact, it was a ridiculous statement but "I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it." Self-defense, assinine? I'll have to remember that. I take it you didn't read the CNN article that I posted... I was referring to American foreign policy in the middle east. Here it is again http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/18/dobbs.july19/index.html -

If I criticized a trade made by the Edmonton Oilers, would that mean I hate hockey and must be a supporter of dog shows and jai-alai? -
We already allow single-interest political parties in this country. So I'm not sure what you're getting at. Exactly we have several fringe parties in Canada. Let's see there's the Christian Heritage Party, the Marxist-Leninist Party, the Communist Party, the Natural Law party to name a few. Hell there are groups right now trying to replace Conservative candidates (some of them incumbants) with single issue, anti-SSM candidates and that's one of our major parties.

Criticizing the Government's "Slow" Response to Lebanese
MightyAC replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Those people went through a pretty traumatic experience. They waited in masses while officials tried to call families in alphabetical order. They were then packed in like sardines into a brutally hot boat without adequate water. I'm not sure how long the ride is from Lebanon to Cyprus but it’s long...anyway, by the time it arrived people were vomiting and passing out from heat exhausting. I'm not defending the "nit-picking" but I can somewhat sympathize with them. When people have been so uncomfortable for so long and feel like crap they often say things they don't really mean. Immediately after getting off the boat one woman said "If I knew what the evacuation would be like I'd have stayed in Lebanon". I'm pretty sure that after she was able to cool down, have a drink of water and reflect on the entire situation she would not have made the same statement...hell I get angry and bash the government every time I wait in a neverending line to access any government services (e.g. passport, drivers license or health card renewal) and I’m in an air-conditioned building. -
"The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously." Hubert Horatio HUMPHREY "I have always been among those who believed that the greatest freedom of speech was the greatest safety, because if a man is a fool the best thing to do is to encourage him to advertise the fact by speaking." Woodrow WILSON Free speech may mean hearing things that make you uncomfortable. What's worse giving whack-jobs the right to speak their mind or a government that decides what can and cannot be said? We wouldn't have to put up with annoying free speech like this in China or Cuba...but then again most of us would already have mysteriously disappeared for expressing our thoughts like we do on this site. Following the wisdom of the Woodrow Wilson quote I posted, this is a golden opportunity for the Dutch police to monitor the activity of the party's supporters.

Two things: 1) what "industry" is that specifically? does it generate power in competition to windpower? 2) why does the "industry" not do it themselves? whose jobs are at stake? We have a lot of space in Canada. We could put a lawn-garden pinwheel on every tower and the total power generated would add up. I wonder what competitors in the dirty-electrical-supply industry think about windpower. An acquaintance of mine is a member of the Power Workers' Union and he's dead set against the widespread use of wind power. His monthly newsletters have told him to be very pro nuclear and coal. If I were a betting man…actually I am a betting man. Five bucks says that both nuclear and coal plants require a lot of employees to operate.

Harper & Israeli Invasion of Lebanon
MightyAC replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
A good article by Lou Dobbs from CNN about America's foreign policy in the middle east. I think he makes some excellent points. Here's the link Dobbs: Not so smart when it comes to the Middle East Here's the text: -
Aye, wind is not a great baseline power system but it is a superb supplemental one. Some places add their wind generated electricity to the grid when necessary and when it's not, they use the power to generate hydrogen. That seems like a good idea. In know we still use quite a bit of coal and natural gas. Would it be possible to lower the output of our fossil fuel powered plants while the green power facilities are producing significant amounts of power and increase the output when they're not?

Stephen Harper's new game: Hide-the-Priority
MightyAC replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Maybe it should have been one of the five priorities, but it wasn't. I understand why they changed the big 5 to include it though... they poured a boatload (or 3 boatloads) of money into it. At the same time they use the excuse that "It's not one of our 5 priorities" when explaining their cuts or lack of attention in other areas. If a non-priority gets a multi-billion dollar infusion then that excuse is a little weak. -
I agree, this is starting to get pretty sickening, he's starting to make Stockwell Day look good! Maybe Stockwell could take part and drive 2 Canadians at a time from Beirut to Cyprus on his Sea Doo.

"Vatican 'is going back to days of Inquisition'"
MightyAC replied to a topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Hopefully, this will cause Catholic scientists to examine their faith and its values more closely. As a result some of them may abandon the (IMO) draconian religion and continue their important work. Plus, examination may benefit the church as well. Does the RCC really want moderates posing as Catholics anyway? If enough false Catholics leave the faith it can really become the anachronistic society they are trying to be. -
That's what makes the world go round.

A shameless PR exercise but a great idea nonetheless. If my job depended on winning popularity contests I'd do the same thing.

My daughter and my cousins daughter have now had to have bone marrow transplants, until this happens in your family one does not have the right to deny this easier procedure. Do I have to have a child or cousin in the army before I can debate military funding? Anyway, I'm guessing that you missed the sarcasm in BD's post.

More Tory MPs question wisdom of another gay-marriage vote
MightyAC replied to a topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Yeah, it's clear from this and other posts that you are willing to accept the change in definition if that's the will of the people. Which, I applaud since most are not as civil about such topics. You did say that you supported "keeping the previous definition but addressing the question of collateral benefits for same-sex couples via the often suggested 'legal union'." So that's why I pointed out the fact that the meaning of marriage has changed drastically over time so why cling to a snapshot now. I too could not care less "whether an ancient Roman Emperor liked to play for both teams". However, the idea of marriage is very old and Canada is very young. Marriage existed and was evolving within various societies long before Canada existed. Canada was settled by Europeans that brought their current incarnation of marriage with them. Over time Canadian society has evolved and now there is a conflict between it and the previous definition of marriage. IMO it is time for the definition to evolve again. I don't agree with change for change sake nor do I agree with adopting what is "fashionable at the time". However, I would hardly call inclusiveness and equality fads. A significant portion of our society is homosexual and always has been. What has changed is the proportion of Canadians willing to treat them as equals. Society will continue to change and more traditions and laws will change with it. Your RCMP comment is a little ridiculous. You know better than most that rules change on a case by case basis. Using a simple uniform change as an example of society caving into what is fashionable at the time is pathetic. Would it bother you if your local coffee pourer wore a turban instead of a Tim Horton's visor or ball cap? -
More Tory MPs question wisdom of another gay-marriage vote
MightyAC replied to a topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Throughout history the purpose and meaning of marriage has changed and evolved drastically as society has changed and evolved. In my opinion, society defines the meaning marriage, not the other way around. It seems to me that society has changed enough to warrant changing the traditional definition of marriage. I hate to use the word traditional because it implies that the idea that a man married a woman for love existed forever. Our previous definition of marriage is actually a fairly recent idea, historically speaking. Although, not common practice SSM has occurred in throughout history, in fact Nero married men on two separate occasions. Anyway, my point is that meaning of marriage has changed many times as society changed, why freeze the definition now? -
Generate power on the structure designed to transport power? Brilliant! I doubt the existing transmission towers can withstand the additional weight and force load of a turbine but that is something that could easily be rectified. I'm also a huge proponent of thermal heating and cooling. A new subdivision near where I live has installed community thermal loops. The houses are a little more expensive but they will save an average of 60% on their heating and cooling costs. My local hydro company also offers 10 year financing plans on personal geo-thermal systems, but at a rate of 10%. Even with the ridiculous financing costs people with electrical heat will save money immediately. At current rates natural gas customers will pay a little more each month in the winter but save money in the summer. The loops can be installed in any size of residential lot. I think there is a golden opportunity for the provinces to offer low interest loans for people wanting to install geo-thermal systems. I would also like to see legislation making community loops mandatory in new construction. On the news last night there was a story about a massive geo-thermal cooling project taking place in Toronto. A tunnel is being dug 40 metres under downtown. Water from Lake Ontario is pumped in at 4 degrees circulated through buildings and then pumped back out at 9 or 10 degrees. It's nice to see that green projects are finally becoming more prominent.

It's just a heavy dose of the same hormones used in the pill. From what I understand it's not anymore dangerous but it does cause significant discomfort in the form of upset stomach, cramping, etc. The temporary side effects, along with the cost will ensure that it's not used as routine birth control. I have no problem with women keeping a dose on hand in case of an accident but I hope they realize that drugs have an expiry date. It seems like a better/safer idea to just buy it after a condom breaks...I believe it's effective for up to 72 hours. That guy is such a tool. He is currently targeting Conservative MPs that support or are indifferent to SSM. He is rallying the socons in an attempt to replace moderates with single issue, anti-SSM candidates. One day clowns like McVety will likely be as organized as the conservative Christian groups in the US…then we’ll all be in trouble.
