  1. Whats all this about a form? I got one census reminder in the mail with both languages on it and a code. French on the left and English on the right. It told me to do it online or call a number to get an actual form.

Guess which one I chose to do it on? And if it took me 5 minutes, it was a long time. And yes, I left it there for anyone to see for the next 100 years :P

  2. Quebec has an "us and them" approach to their political thinking. Its driven in by the press. Canada Anglais vs. Quebec Francais is written about almost everyday in the province's major newspapers, Le Journal de Quebec and Le Journal de Montreal. Le Devoir is the only Federalist, French language newspaper in the province. Le Soleil, here in Quebec City, tries to be more federalist, but many times I note articles with a tinge of a soverignist bias. Le Devoir is only printed in Montreal and costs more to buy here in Quebec City than in Montreal :(

Also Le Journal de Quebec and Le Journal de Montreal are owned by Quebecor, who also owns Videotron and also owns TVA. TVA is the highest rated news station in the province and Le Journal de Quebec and Le Journal de Montreal have the highest circulation in the province. I hope people are beginning to get a picture here. Its one of the reasons that there was an article in the political pages of the Journal de Quebec this morning about privatizing the CBC. The CBC is Pierre Peladeau's main competition, and if the CBC were to go private, Pierre would crush it.

  3. Eh, they might "feel" that they need to but they clearly don't. Maybe this guy "felt" that he needed to travel to unusual and dangerous locations? Who's to say he didn't?

Why would somebody feel a need to go to Afghanistan? He'd have to have a reason to need to go to Afghanistan, and a vacation is not a need. The only way it would be a need would be if he really is a spy, and that was his job.

Either the government gets itself in the business of holding people's hands, giving them second chances, and paying for their mistakes, or it doesn't. Personally, I'd rather it didn't. But, if it is going to use taxpayer's money to look after people who make stupid decisions, I honestly have more sympathy for this guy than a criminal or a drug addict, a lot more (as in, very little instead of zero).

Hypothetical situation: You have a car to give away. Do you give it someone who doesn't want to take the bus to work or to someone who can't get to work without a car? Both don't have cars. If we have the services available to help people, who are the ones who are most deserving of those services?

  4. So being a thrill seeker is an unforgivable offense while being an addict or a criminal is fine and dandy and worthy of government help?

I have no idea how you can possibly equate the concepts. Its like comparing apples and oranges. For most people, in my experience, who are addicts and criminals, there is an underlying reason for them to have begun their ways in the first place. Most addicts and criminals don't do what they do because they want to, they do it because they feel a need to.

There is a big difference between wants and needs. I want a 50" HD TV, but I need food. People who do stupid things because they feel they want to do it are not the same as people who do stupid things because they feel they need to do it. And therefore, it is impossible to treat the two types in the same way.

  5. No question some of the nuance is lost in tanslation between the two languages and Charles"I'm a fly on the wall of your conscience!" Adler is conveniently forgetting this, however,I have a very bad feeling about what Layton may have done here....

I get the impression he may have made a Faustian deal with the Devil to make himself electble in Quebec. He seems to have been soft pedalling secession to potential Bloc supporters in an attempt to gain power. This has the possibility,if not probability,to be a mistake of Mulroneyesque proportions! One need only look at the mistakes Mulroney made in dealing with small c secessionists in the '80's to see the outcome of that.I feel Layton might be playing with fire here and the outcome in 4 years might not be a good one for the Dippers or this country...

I agree to a certain extent. Some of the things that Mr. Layton promised to the people of Quebec was to make sure all federal institutions in Quebec should operate under Quebec’s Bill 101 rather than under the federal Official Languages Act, and by saying he will seek to “create winning conditions” to seek Quebec’s consent to enter the Confederation. This opens up a whole can of worms, but won him seats in Quebec. I am curious if his majority Quebec caucus will now call him to try to implement his promises.

  6. Well, at least it sounds like he knows how to speak English which is a turnaround from the Non French speaking NDP MP from QUE who didn't campaign because she would have been booted before the election. w I I guess that shows how anxious the Quebec voters were to get rid of the Bloc.

Gilles Duceppe hung himself during the French debates. He knew that the people in Quebec would vote in this election to try to dispose of the Conservative party, or at least keep the Conservatives as a minority government. But Duceppe didn't learn from history. Do not threaten Quebecers. They will hang you for it. By making the statement that the BQ was the only thing standing in the way of a Conservative majority, the people of Quebec said, at the election, "Thats not true Mr. Duceppe. There is another option." The people in Quebec didn't vote for the NDP, they voted against Harper, and after the debates, against Duceppe.

  7. It's interesting that when people make mistakes along the lines of doing drugs, or not getting a good education, or committing a crime, or something similar, many posters on these boards are espousing their beliefs that people deserve a second chance, that the government should provide programs to help them get back on track, etc. And yet those mistakes are mistakes much more likely to be repeated, much more likely to be a recurring problem in someone's life, and probably much more expensive over the decades that the person in question will require government aid.

Why do criminals, drug addicts, welfare bums, etc, all deserve government help and a second chance, but a guy who made one bad choice on where to travel does not?

Oh come on! If I jump off a bridge, do I expect the government to save me? Do I get a second chance? Walking into a war zone is not a criminal activity, nor do you do it because you are down on your luck, nor do you do it because you are addicted to "thrills". It is done to get attention and it is a form of suicide. Jumping off a bridge is probably an awesome experience, but there is a good chance it might be your last. This person is not an addict or criminal, he is a thrill seeker, plain and simple. And if his thrill seeking causes him injury or death, we, as Canadians, should not be held responsible for coming to his rescue without consequences.

  8. Stats Canada, proved that and that is one of the reasons that the Tories are downsizing the census, they don't want the TRUE info. to be available. The following link to a article about all of these points and it makes sense if you listen to the opposition party in QP saying the same thing. http://thetyee.ca/News/2011/04/29/HarperPushesPrisons/index.html

I got the short form the other day and I think it took only a few minutes to fill out. I once got the long form and that too didn't take me more than a half hour. I wish everyone got the long form. I check the statscan website often. Its a great tool to figure out demographics and such. I'm surprised that the political parties don't use it more often to target specific candidates for specific ridings.

  9. Thanks but no thanks. I get more than my fill of that station's line up of right wing blow hards on days where I am stuck in traffic and bored with the sports station down the dial's talk show.

The only thing worth listening to on 640 was the Leafs games and they'll be gone to another station soon too.

Right wing or no...I actually heard the words come out of the mouth of babes. If I didn't hear it, I would be the first to say the article is BS. But it is said.

  10. This comment from young Pierre makes me wonder if he misunderstood what NDP's supposed to be about....or was he told differently.....I mean to come outright to say that with confidence, he must believe what he said.

He must...and it must have been very difficult for him to hold back his true feelings during the vetting process leading to his candidacy. I'm surprised the NDP wouldn't know about his political ideologies, and that this young man didn't understand the policies of the NDP. For him to come right out and say something like this directly goes against the policies of his own party.

Being 19, there is a strong possibility that this young man may be a future leader of the NDP. Hopefully he won't last that long, because if he does, we may have to refer to the NDP as the NBQ.

  11. There is always someone crazy who tells himself, "Man...where can I go this year that will be exciting and cheap? I know. I'll go to Afghanistan" :P

Really though, I hope he gets out OK, and then send him the bill for how much it will cost the taxpayers for his release. Or fine him for being stupid.

  12. Media need not worry. The politcal scene wouldn't be dull by the looks of it. One story after another....and we haven't even started Parliament yet.

First there was Mulcair and his Bin Laden photo comment. Next was the Vegas lady MP.

    And now....heeeere's young Pierre, the 19 year-old!

    http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/05/05/adler-separatism-lives-on

Looks like Layton is set up for major migraine. If I'd seen Harper's hair turn gray fast in 5 years....boy, I'm predicting a completely bald Layton in 4 years time!

So....these are what the hand picked candidates, that went through thorough vetting processes, end up doing to the NDP. This is a future NDP leader that is speaking.

  13. No they did the work that is why the party nominated them. Most of them have been involved in running, volunteering, going to conventions, and building the party. Even the ones in Quebec so please don't give me that shit. I will quote the great Liberal leader Micheal Ignatieff on this one.

"The only thing Canadians hate more then a loser is a sore loser"

Sorry. Even the young MPs all built a young New Democrat organization at their University where I am sure they got a lot of guff and heat from their professors and the young Liberals and Conservatives on Campus. They did work.

But some did no work in their ridings that they represented. They didn't have to move to those ridings, nor visit. I have done quite a bit of work for the NDP and now I plan to move to a riding where the NDP is not represented in the House of Commons and do all the work necessary to try to become a candidate. But what I fear is another Berthier-Maskinonge, where I'm sure there were NDP activists, Ms. Bousseau had to get her list of names from someone going door-to-door, but none of those activists were chosen to run by Mr. Layton.
