  2. 10 provinces and 3 territories Each province gets 5 senators. Each terrotory gets 2. Could make it easier on them. Would like to hear others ideas and outcomes.
  3. It's a minority government this how you have to govern to get things passed. If you think this is bad try following US politics with its horse trading for votes. The government has teamed up with all members on at least one piece of legistlation. The Cons were outmanuevered at out played politically. But who wants somethings like poltics in poltics.
  4. The whip saw voters are the most interesting a could decide alot. They make up 30% of voters and 2/3 of them are bouncing between the NDP and Conservatives. While a 1/3 seem to saty with the Grits. Is it just me or does it say something about voter knowledge when they move back and forth across the political spectrum so often. Is it media ? Chomsky might say so.
  5. Alberta is a beautiful place. But its hard to enjoy with all the red necks.
  6. I would lean southren
  7. Avg Income is an inaccurate stat. As it would still come out to the same if 99% of wealth was in 1 % of the population. Cost of living is a factor the Unemployment figures don't factor. You could be making $50k per year but if the cost of living is $60k then your screwed. My guess is a lot of people in Calgary work so they can afford to work. Plus when things go bust and they will and do. The tories will just ship the trouble else where. Maybe they will give 1 way West Jet tickets next.
  8. That would have been a rather clever remark if the people getting hurt most from the flooding didn't happen to (on the whole) be the people least benefitting from the oil money. Yes but my guess is they probably voted for the Tories. As there are some Albertans on here, I'm sure you'll be able to note that, for example, Calgary has an enormous "working poor" problem. Being that a staggering number of homeless people actually have full-time jobs! The Tories haven't done much about that for quite a few years. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My all time favourite Alberta PC "Social" program was when they offered all the people on welfare a one way bus ticket anywhere in Canada. So they could reduce there welfare rolls. Alberta is the Texas of Canada. Just ask Stephen "W" Harper.
  9. Ahh but mother nature is fighting back, now. Must be Bad kharma.
  10. I you don't trust the NDP to the right thing. Keep voting for the Repulicans or Democrats. Because that's all the Cons and Liberals have become. I believe the NDP is good for Canada !
  11. Well then we should spread the word, if you want to keep the Cons/reform/ca out and don't want a corrupt government. Your only choice is to vote NDP. Personally, I think the Cons will implode and split again. The Easts Red Tory amd the West 's Christian right(though growing in parts of ONT) are like oil and water.
  12. I wouldn't say the NDP are socialists, just look at the govts of SK and MB. They are social liberal democrats. As far as unions, I don't see why that would scare people any more or less then large international corporations. Anyways unions need to redefine their role in our society. The orginal reasons they were created are nearly obsolete. Most have become a protection racket(allowing bad employees to stay employed) or black mail(wages v strike). I do believe that they are still needed, as the minute they all go away we would return to Indutrial Revolution style work places, but they must find a new issue, maybe indimidation free work places, management sensitivity, etc. On the quebec question, its like the chicken v egg debate, can you name one prominent francophone social democrat that would be interested in leading the NDP ?
  13. That particular issue would be solved by making it universal and mandatory like elementary school.
  14. In no way should this program be limited to low income or working parents. It should be looked at as Education.. The kids learn social skills, listening skills, basic math and reading. Also, in no way should this be a substitute for parenting. Only an additional resource in creating good people. Educated people. Prosperous people. On the topic of a paternal government. What should a government do for its citizens ? Roads? Job Banks? small business grants? farm support ? military?
  15. I believe that the Day care program is an essential extension of our education system. It should be looked at more as a pre-school, in this day and age children have a lot more knowledge to acquire and therefore , need to start with the basics at an earlier age. This isn't the babysitter. They learn basic knowledge and more. Well on the topic of education. It is my belief that this should up there with health care as a right for all citizens and should be fully funded for all !
  16. I always thought that The NDPs policies were a good match for Quebecers.
  17. It seems that the NDPs policies, leaders and trustworthyness always poll quite high but the people just don't vote for them. How is that they are not the alternative to the scandel ridden Liberals ? They have become the party for women, families and urbanites. All the popular policies that Martin is leaning on in this budget are NDP policies.
