jdobbin Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 I wondering if we were going to see this when his term ended. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Rick Hillier is expected to be replaced as top military commander when his three-year term expires in February, Conservative insiders have told CTV.Hillier, who is popular with rank and file soldiers, had hoped to stay on to oversee the war in Afghanistan. "Most certainly I think Hiller would welcome a second or a renewal of his appointment and the troops would welcome that also," said Col. (ret'd) Michel Drapeau, a military analyst. Hillier has been described as a larger-than-life soldier's soldier, spending Christmas with his troops and fighting to rebuild the Armed Forces. Quote
Visionseeker Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 I wondering if we were going to see this when his term ended. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories A dream Conservative candidate. Will likely be one if the election is held-back until spring. Not that that has anything to do with this mind you... Quote
Fortunata Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 I think the government is making a big mistake. Hillier can sell the war that the Cons can't seem to do. I mean who would you believe more - Hillier or MacKay? A dream Conservative candidate. Would he run for a party that canned him because he had a higher profile and more credability than the party of day's minister? I hope not. Quote

I was wondering that myself. However, if the General were to become involved with politics, who else could he run for? The NDP isn't exactly strong on defense in their platforms as a rule, and the Liberals were the ones who cut defense spending during their years in power. It's all moot though. He won't run anytime soon, I think. Quote "If you don't believe your country should come before yourself, you can better serve your country by livin' someplace else." Stompin' Tom Connors
Argus Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 I think the government is making a big mistake. Hillier can sell the war that the Cons can't seem to do. I mean who would you believe more - Hillier or MacKay? Hillier played fast and loose with the rules while jockeying for power with O'Connor. His department's misinformation campaign deliberately caused a great deal of trouble for O'Connor and the government, and damaged the credibility of the mission in Afghanistan - particularly over that "detainees" idiocy. He should have been fired long ago. Would he run for a party that canned him because he had a higher profile and more credability than the party of day's minister? I hope not. Hillier will not run for the Tories. He has too many enemies in the party now. Fortunata Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 It looks like it was one of those deliberate leaks designed to gauge public opinion. So far public opinion seems to be with General Hillier. I guess we'll see come February. and damaged the credibility of the mission in Afghanistan As far as I'm concerned Hillier is the reason for much of the public support for Afghanistan. Pull him and see if people trust a new man who's opinion is told to him beforehand by the Harpercons as is typical with this government. Quote
M.Dancer Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 Hillier will not run for the Tories. He has too many enemies in the party now. In that case he should bow to tradition and lead the Tories.......otherwise after Oct 10th John Tory will want the job..... M.Dancer Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 Another Globe Straw poll....but I am shocked at the numbers so far. I would have thought given the remarkable job the Gen. is doing......... Do you think Canada's Chief of Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier, is doing a good job? Canadians need someone to blame for the perceived shortcomings of the Afghan mission. After all, O'Connor's gone and cannot be lambasted anymore and McKay hasn't yet screwed up.
