Hey! I think that many people will agree with me that hypocrisy of Washington goes the limits – even in relations of Washington with its over-Atlantic allies (like Turkey). Just see, on the blob Washington stands up for Turkey's entering the EU. At the same time the US closes up the way of development of Turkey as a secular state that was determined by the first president of Turkey – Mustafa Kemal Atatьrk – integration with Europe.

Why do I say so? Why, you need to know that Washington has gone to the expense of some $35,000,000 to ensure the rise to power of an islamist president, who should be loyal to Washington.

Owing to its geopolitical position, Turkey is playing a key role in providing energy security of the West. That is why in case islam oriented president catches power in Turkey (and Washington has done just everything possible to push him through to the president cabinet), Turkey will never be allowed to enter the European Union and will always stay an obedient tool of political leverage in hands of Uncle Sam.

Link please. Did you know that there is a desert at the North pole? You get to it through a hole, and that's where santa Claus lives, which is why he has that big beard, because he's really an old Arab whose sled is pulled by camels. I know this for a fact, but I can't seem to find the link that proves it beyond all doubt.

And the people and nations of Europe have no say in their own future?

Turkey is a formidable ally and a precious strategic partner but Mr. Sarkozy is right, Europe does not border Iraq, not in geography nor in spirit. A Mediterranean Union could use Turkish stewardship, but the thought of Turkey being the driving force of Europe (reflecting projected growth rates) does not sit right with many Europeans, and with due reason.

Convince me with a link from a reputable source. Turkey has several opponents to EU membership within the EU, not least of which is France.
First of all, it is not in the interests of the US to allow or foster a condominium between the Islamist Levant and Europe. Second of all, it is not in Europe's interest to have an unclosable open door to Islamic immigration. Third of all, it is not in the US's interest to have Europe be a portal that creates for them an unclosable open door to Islamic immigration.

Well here's another slant. Turkey has been a good US ally, allowing American military bases on its soil (although not allowing the kinds of sorties that Rheummy would have liked to have seen).

If Turkey joins the EU, who is Turkey going to be more beholden to - the US or those "pansies" in the EU?

Higgly again!

right on the money!

Obviously, it would be the EU.

Insults are the ammunition of the unintelligent - do not use them. It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions. Derogatory terms such as "loser", "idiot", etc are not permitted unless the context clearly implies that it is not serious. Rule of thumb: Play the ball, not the person (i.e. tackle the argument, not the person making it).
