M.Dancer Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 I'm not sure if they are Anglicans....I'm not sure if they are atheists either.....but apparently this discrimination is beneficial..... The tribunal's president said groups of straight women found homosexual men entertaining but that such attention was dehumanising, the BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says. Managers complained raucous hen nights and stag parties created a poisonous atmosphere for its gay clientele, our correspondent says. "If I can limit the number of heterosexuals entering the Peel, then that helps me keep the safe balance," the hotel's manager, Tom McFeely, told Australian radio, according to the Reuters news agency. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6697469.stm I wonder what the litmus test will be.....? If yo can say shibboleth without lisping you can't come in? But what I find even more incredible, Melbourne with a population the same size as Toronto..... He said while Melbourne had 2,000 venues catering for heterosexuals, his was the only bar aimed exclusively at gay men. Has only one Gay bar........ I am reminded of the old saw about two shoe salesman going to this remote country.....one writes home that there was no prospect as no one wore shoes while the other said send back up, huge untapped market..... Rue Posted May 28, 2007 Report Posted May 28, 2007 Come on that depiction of gay people you used is just plain dumb-ass. You really think you can stereo-type gays as people who lisp? What next? Come on. Get a life. we can do better then that. If we are still at the point of disparaging gays with such ridiculous stereo-types, its time to grow up. You want to be funny as opposed to disparaging against gays, be my guest. Why turn what was an amusing story into a dumb-ass statement about gays? Come on Dancedude. You are better then that. Quote

You really think you can stereo-type gays as people Had to in order to get the full use and meaning of shibboleth in, which as you might know was used to.... The term originates from the Hebrew word ?????, which literally means "stream, torrent".[ It derives from an account in the Hebrew Bible, in which pronunciation of this word was used to distinguish members of a group (the Ephraimites) whose dialect lacked a /?/ sound (as in shoe) from members of a group (the Gileadites) whose dialect did include such a sound. separate one group from another....... It seemed appropriate. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Guest coot Posted May 29, 2007 Report Posted May 29, 2007 I have no problem with segregation in bars. A great deal of pub culture was lost when they were all forced to allow women. In a sense, they are just clubs that restrict their membership. Just as I have no problem with women's organizations, I have no problem with lesbian bars. I remember when I lived in Montreal there was a quaint gay leather bar called KOX that only allowed men (I believe they allowed women on Sundays). People should be able to associate with whomever they choose, and if someone's feeling are hurt because they aren't in the club, well, they are free to start their own club. Quote

cybercoma Posted May 29, 2007 Report Posted May 29, 2007 Let me know when Ozzie Pubs start telling society that straight folk are morally reprehensible and deserving of an eternity of torture after death and that if society disagrees they're just as deserving of eternal torment. Quote

guyser Posted May 29, 2007 Report Posted May 29, 2007 Pubs or Public Houses have allowed women since Nelson was a lad...... Geez Dancer you must be young. I drank in the "Line" at the old Skyline Hotel by the airport and woman were not allowed there for many years, and when they tried to get in they were booed out the joint. That was late 70's early 80s. Actually I miss the place, $.25 draught, 10 cent pickled eggs and pepperoni sticks. Quote

Not the squared headed liquor licensing laws on Ontario...... even then though, if I remember, there was an entrance to the lounge for women and escorts..... guyser Posted May 29, 2007 Report Posted May 29, 2007 even then though, if I remember, there was an entrance to the lounge for women and escorts..... You are right5, I do recall a door for that. Never saw it used but it was there. I can recall only two or three times a woman came in. Was that not a pub? Quote

You are right5, I do recall a door for that. Never saw it used but it was there. I can recall only two or three times a woman came in. Was that not a pub? No....not by definition......a pub is a place where minors may go, (but not drink) where there is entertainment and food. In the part of England my mother's family is from, the pub was where you could mail a parcel and get phone calls.....but beer and liquor to take away... In ontario back in the 70s...in bars you couldn't move your drink from table to table, couldn't drink standing (to discourage dancing...) no games (to discourage betting....) ...restaurants had different rules,,,,meals had to be served if you had a drink........ Quebec in the 70s and 80s had even more bizarre laws..... Taverns sold beer and draught only, women were not allowed and they were open from breakfast to midnight, monday to saturday and served food. Brasseries sold beer, draught wine and cider, women were allowed, same hours as tavernes Bar salons served beer but no draught, wine and booze, women were allowed and tey were open 7 days a week 1pm to 3 am Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
