hiti Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Widow pursues PM's benefit pledge Woman, 80, presses demand for home care promised by Harper as opposition leader GLORIA GALLOWAY From Thursday's Globe and Mail OTTAWA — Stephen Harper wrote to Joyce Carter when he was leader of the Opposition to say a Conservative government would "immediately" extend a national home-care program to widows of all veterans of the Second World War and the Korean War. Two budgets have come and gone since Mr. Harper's party took office and Ms. Carter, an 80-year-old widow from St. Peter's, N.S., is still waiting for him to keep his promise. "While I'm alive, I am going to keep at him," she said yesterday in a telephone interview. "He's not going to get any peace from me until he does." Ms. Carter is concerned that the Veterans Independence Program is not available to widows whose husbands died before 1981 or who failed to apply for it while still alive. The program provides services such as home maintenance, housekeeping and personal care. http://tinyurl.com/22mzo8 Quote "You cannot bring your Western standards to Afghanistan and expect them to work. Who's Doing What? Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Shame that an 80 year old woman has to try and make the Govt . keep a promise. We should be doing more for our vets, and their widows. Quote Harper differed with his party on some key policy issues; in 1995, for example, he was one of only two Reform MPs to vote in favour of federal legislation requiring owners to register their guns. http://www.mapleleafweb.com/election/bio/harper.html "You've got to remember that west of Winnipeg the ridings the Liberals hold are dominated by people who are either recent Asian immigrants or recent migrants from eastern Canada: people who live in ghettoes and who are not integrated into western Canadian society." Good thing that this is not one of the Liberal programs that Steve cut. Too bad the Liberals used 1981 as their cut off date but then Steve used that to make his election promise, which he is now ignoring so 80 year old widows have to hound him to keep his word. And to use the excuse that a staffer wrote the letter is shameful. Just how the double hockey pucks does Steve live with himself?
