Internet Censorship

Recommended Posts

The Internet is one of the fastest-growing industries in the history of the planet. As of 2002, pornography was a 30 billion dollar bussiness. Almost as large, conent-blocking software swooped in on the world like a vulture.

Blocking software, with names such as Net Nanny and Cyber-Patrol, are, in my eyes, a violation of freedom of speech and press. Net Nanny has been known to block an entire site on the basis of one or two occurences of "keywords", such as: racism, gay, lesbian, Negro, sex, and drugs. In fact, CyberPatrol blocked a site on preventing drugs. <_<

I, for one, am a strong supporter of sites such as peacefire.com , devoted to helping children under 18 practice their freedoms, supposedly enjoyed by all Americans...

Wrong. Though I am against government-supported censorship in all forms, you must realize that these are privately owned companies and the installation of such software is decided by the purchaser.

And you might want to check the spelling on your link. I'm afraid to click on it, but the spellings don't match up.

Peacefire has joined forces with the ACLU to undermine the rights of parents and of society to protect minors from accessing inappropriate/harmful sites on the Internet.

While it may be true that a few "innocuous" sites are blocked as well, minors can still access a wealth of valuable information on the net with blocking software in place.

Blocking software is a necessity in this day and age with pornography and sexual predators rampant on the Internet.

Morgan, Vercingetorix, I would agree. Freedom of speech is a given, however, where children are concerned society has always compromised their freedom in light of their lesser responsibility and capacity. Adults can be trusted to view and access what they want and to ignore what they do not, so a free run of the net is permissible. However, children cannot be trusted to make such distinctions and are naturally curious. It does not make sense to allow them the same access.

The same logic gives us the reasons why children cannot smoke, drink, drive or vote. Diminished responsibility yields diminished rights.

Didn't know where to put this one, figured here was as good as any as it didn't deserve it's own thread.

TALK ABOUT SENSITIVE

an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled "master" and "slave" and filed a discrimination complaint with the county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.

Oh well, I suppose all former slaves are happy and in great anticipation to the new name they are going to recieve in the history books. As for Doms and Subs, a whole new sexual dictionary is going to have to be written. Truely we live in exciting times!

Brave new world.
