stignasty Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Questions swirl as Canada's environment commissioner replaced Last Updated: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 | 7:23 PM ET CBC News Johanne Gélinas, Canada's environment commissioner, is leaving her position immediately amid reports she has been fired over her forceful calls for action on climate change. In September 2006, Gélinas released a highly critical report attacking the previous Liberal government's efforts to address climate change in the past 10 years, while outlining policies for the Conservative government to implement. She also openly criticized the Tories' recent clean air plan, saying it did little to address the problem of climate change and greenhouse gases in the short term. In a statement Tuesday, Auditor General Sheila Fraser said Gélinas was "leaving the position to pursue other opportunities" and also announced a review of environmental and sustainable development audit practices. "Madame Gélinas and her team have done valuable work assisting parliamentarians through their audits of government's management of its environmental and sustainable-development responsibilities," Fraser said. Sources inside and outside Gélinas's office said Fraser fired her following months of friction over Gélinas's mandate, the Canadian Press reported. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/01/30/gelinas-fired.html Quote "It may not be true, but it's legendary that if you're like all Americans, you know almost nothing except for your own country. Seems like I was right that there was some question as to what the Commissioner's job was. Quote

Everybody will be happy with it seems to me... stignasty Posted January 31, 2007 Author Report Posted January 31, 2007 Not sure what to make of this resignation. Everybody will be happy with it seems to me... Well, that will all depend on what kind of a "resignation" it was. According to CTV there are stirrings that she was fired. "Environment Commissioner Johanne Gelinas has lost her job after reportedly stepping over the line in her calls for action on climate change. Auditor-General Sheila Fraser issued a news release on Tuesday saying Gelinas had left the position to "pursue other opportunities. "Madame Gelinas and her team have done valuable work assisting parliamentarians through their audits of government's management of its environmental and sustainable development responsibilities.'' Reports say, however, that Gelinas was fired for being too much of an advocate. She hasn't commented yet on her firing." http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories Quote "It may not be true, but it's legendary that if you're like all Americans, you know almost nothing except for your own country. Genlinas Sept. 2005 Report Gelinas oversees environmental issues for the auditor general. Her report says the government produces a lot of talk but not much action on environmental issues. I guess it's all just a matter of setting priorities. Gee, remind me again who the environment minister was then? Because the initiative came from the Conservatives 11 years before her appointment,I guess you could say the Liberals fast-tracked the appointment. I'm saying placing the office in the Auditor-General's office was the mistake and that originated with the Tories. And if you're original intent was to hammer Dion on this, he was Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs at the time. Quote
geoffrey Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Perhap's she was fired for not providing any actual results for the money spent on environment. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
jdobbin Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Perhap's she was fired for not providing any actual results for the money spent on environment. I have no idea but the Green Party thought highly of her not surprisingly. Quote
jdobbin Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Harper must have thought highly of her as well because he was reading her report again today during Question Period. Quote
