jdobbin Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/conten...7d11d702ef294de I don't see the natural connection of banks to movie theatre chains but it does raise the interesting notion of naming rights in a general sense. We've seen it used for sports and arts facilities, we've see it with sporting events like Hockey Night in Canada and various college bowls out there. We've seen it used for new faculty buildings at colleges and we've seen naming rights for whole sports leagues like Tim Horton's with Timbits youth hockey. Recently, public schools have considered getting into the naming game. Most times the name comes with all sorts of codicils such as food and concessions rights, bank machines and the like. Is there a limit to what can be sold off? Is every edifice or object something that can be sold even when it is publicly owned? I know there is a story out there right now that a woman is offering her pregnant belly for Superbowl ads. Yikes. Perhaps she can sell the naming rights for her child when it born. Quote
M.Dancer Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 Corporations have also dabbled with the rights to street names..... One developer I know wanted to sell the name of a whole new community, unfortunately the prospective buyer thought that the risks of being named in the news ..... Police are investigating a triple murder suicide at Microsoft Park this morning, drugs are suspected... .....outweighed the benefits of being attached to a new affluent community.......... The developer already takes that risk if the neighborhood goes bad while they are constructing it. For example: Hyde Park continues to produce murderous Doctor Jecklles! Most new subdivisions don't have such problems nor are naming rights in perpetuity...yet. Disney has their Celebration subdivision. Quote
Figleaf Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 Perhaps Scotiabank plans to resell the theatre names on a one-off basis. Anyway, these naming rights are getting tedious. They're just tiresome mouthfuls that nobody uses or takes note of. Imagine reciting 'The Cineplex Bank of Nova Scotia Theatre'. Quote
fellowtraveller Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 I go to quite a few movies and am pissed mightily at paying planty of money, only to be subjected to 10 or more minutes of commercials before the movie previews start. Now, we will no doubt see a slew 0f bank commercials first. I am trying to think of an effective campaign to protest this that doesn't involve hurling a 20 ounce soda at the screen. M.Dancer Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 I laughed when Rogers bought the sky dome.....I don't know any one who calls it the Rogers Centre...I sometimes call it the Cabledome but more often the f*cking Cable Monpoloy Dome Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
