leonardcohen Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 http://www.garoweonline.com/stories/publis...icle_7172.shtml This is just an interesting story i came across and i would like to get some feedback on. I find it encouraging that there are people willing to go back to try to rebuild Somalia which is so devastated by war when they could have, very easily, stayed in their adopted country and never looked back. Perhaps i am being naive to think they could, with their determination and skill and more then a little luck start to put Somalia on the right path to sustainability. Thoughts? Melanie_ Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 This is an interesting perspective I wasn't aware of. How will a Canadian world view, superimposed on a Somalian world view, impact policy and governance models in this country? Mogadishu was in the papers again today with an airstrike and general chaos; they are a long way from peace. Also, will it be an asset or a liability to the new government to have such a strong Western influence? Another issue could be the dependence on the Western influenced politicians, and a marginalization of those who stayed. Sadly enough, a large proportion of Africans who come to Canada are the most educated of all Africans and numbers show that most of them DON'T go back. I was reading an article on the issue of Africa's brain-Drain in Maclean's just the other day. In fact, I believe it's in the current issue if you are interested in reading it. leonardcohen Posted January 26, 2007 Author Report Posted January 26, 2007 And then there is this:Somalia silences Canadian voices http://www.thestar.com/News/article/171467 I read about this in the local newspaper last week and was discouraged by it. It seems that the transitional government is trying to flex its' muscles to see if anyone is going to take them seriously and the radio station makes an easy target. It's hard to see what kind of threat the radio station poses, hopefully cooler heads will prevail and they'll back down when they realize that. One question though, would there be any kind of resentment among the people about those who left for a better life coming back to be part of the ruling class?
