jbg Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 < sarcasm> This kind of conference (lnk) looks like a fantastic way to attract investment and lift people out of povery: </ sarcasm> Excerpts below: Anti-Capitalist Forum Opens in NairobiNAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - More than 80,000 people gathered for an annual anti-capitalist conference in Kenya's capital on Saturday, hoping to network with other activists and protest global policies they say hurt the poor. The World Social Forum will be a chance to showcase ``Africa and her unbroken history of struggle against foreign domination, colonialism and neocolonialism,'' according to a statement on the event Web site. *snip* Former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda (sic) flagged off the march. ``We must fight poverty together,'' he yelled to the crowd. *snip* The World Social Forum was first held in Brazil in 2001 and coincides each year with the market-friendly World Economic Forum of political and business leaders in Davos, Switzerland. Those at the six-day social forum, in contrast, traditionally criticize free trade and denounce the evils of capitalism Anyone ask how much money Kenneth Kaunda (sic) has in his Swiss bank account, and how much UN aid reached his people? Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
jbg Posted January 20, 2007 Author Report Posted January 20, 2007 Should the leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition have attended? Martin and Chretien often galavanted around Africa to show their compassion. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." jdobbin Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Should the leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition have attended? Martin and Chretien often galavanted around Africa to show their compassion. Knock it off. No one supports the brutal regime but it doesn't mean that the people are ignored. Canada's present day Health minister was just in the country the day before. Yeesh. Your comment is dumb partisan bashing. Why not go over after Tories if Kenya is in your target, huh? Canada helped open a Level Four lab in Nairobi this week. Money came from the past and present government of Canada. Does that mean Harper supports Kaunda? Tony Clement was there to cut the ribbon. http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/01/19/lab-nairobi.html Quote

I didn't mention any particularly brutal regime. My problem is with useless confabs whose sole purpose is to bash the West simply for being economically successful. jdobbin Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 My mistake. We're getting our African nations confused. Kenya's president is Mwai Kibaki and does not have a brutal regime compared to some African nations. Kibaki has a coalition government, some of whom are Marxists. Overall though, Kenya has a free market society. Quote
