jdobbin Posted December 1, 2006 Report Posted December 1, 2006 Australia and Canada do have very similar governments: same constitutional monarchy, same Westminster parliamentary system, and similar conservative parties currently in power. Howard wasn't invited here soon after Harper became PM for no reason at all.As per Dean at the Liberal convention, I found this letter in the Star somewhat amusing; mostly because it's true: The media has had a heyday with the Dean and his scream. It gave them the excuse of playing it over and over again. The Conservatives are free to have anyone come speak. Perhaps, they might get Arnie to come to speak although he seems to get along better with Gary Doer. Quote

No doubt they have - someone making an ass of themselves is exactly the kind of television that sells. However, I don't think that's really the point. What the letter writer was saying, and what I'm sure many will agree with, was that while the Conservatives most certainly can invite anyone they wish, if they chose to have an American at their convention, his or her presence would automatically be linked to the Conservative "hidden agenda" to Americanize Canada, while an American at a Liberal convention, speaking extensively about the similarities between the Democrats and the Liberals, is simply mentioned, and, sometimes, the Liberals are even lauded for fostering plurality and cooperation. I'm sure the Conservatives get lots of mileage with the voters by complaining about the liberal media. It it fair given what we saw last election from the media? Probably not. But it helps to look put upon for some voters. Quote
abcon99 Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 I hate journalists because even going in to that profession shows you are at least partly a wuss and a leftist. As for sympathy, keep it, the only reason we talk about lib media bias is to let swing voters know why we hate the press gallery. Even if they cover us nicely, they still think they are powerful and can demand stuff, but the only right they have is to speak, the Prime Minister has the right to say most of them are leftist trash, and should go to hell. He will also tell people what he has done in an election, and if they like it vote for him, if not, don't. As for between elections, the press can @&*% a duck. Quote
