Guest Amrita Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 As the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sets off on a four-day visit to Central Asia on Monday, August 28, 2006, much is anticipated regarding the growing influence of Asia over the rest of the continents. With exuberant energy resources and strategic location the region (Central Asia) has long been drawing the interests of powerful economies. On August 28, 2004, foreign ministers of Japan and Central Asia met in Astana and started the dialogue process ‘Central Asia plus Japan.’ But it was in June this year that the extent of Tokyo's interest became clear. How Japan stands to get benefited by this visit? What are the reasons behind this visit? Is “Natural Resources” the main reason or there is more to this visit ? Mr. Shoeb Hamid in his article “Japan interested in Central Asia” tries to explore the purpose behind this visit. Quote
