Russian president tells press conference in Madrid he intends on inviting group leaders to Moscow in near future; Hamas official says group would accept invitation

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a press conference in Madrid Thursday that he intends on inviting the leaders of the Palestinian terror group to Moscow, Itar-Tass news agency said.

Hamas politburo Khaled Mashaal welcomed the Russian initiative saying group representatives will travel to Moscow should Putin address an official invitation.

“If an invitation is addressed we will accept it. We welcome the courageous Russian position and the declarations of Mr. Putin … in which he does not classify us a terror organization,” AFP quoted Mashaal as saying.

He added that Russia’s position “will lead to a certain equilibrium” in international relations especially that “America’s influence has started to wane because of numerous impasses in which the American administration is entangled.”

Putin was quoted as telling a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in Madrid, where he was on a visit, that "Russia is maintaining contacts with the Hamas organization and intends in the near future to invite the leadership of this organization to Moscow."

Putin reiterated that Russia does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization, and urged the global community to work with a Hamas-led Palestinian government.

"Hamas has arrived at the doors of power through legitimate elections," Putin said. "We must respect the Palestinian people and we have to look for solutions for the Palestinian people, for the international community, and also for Israel. Contacts with Hamas must continue," he added.

I kind of like this. It's very much like Putin "arriving at the doors of power through legitimate elections".

The fact that Putin is a scumbag, a mass murderer, and a man singly determined to destroy the last vestiges of democracy in Russia is, of course, beside the point.

I always enjoy Putins' rhetorical jibes at democracy and its failings. Sure, he's not a nice guy but you have to admire his scathing sense of humour.

I can't think of ANY "nice guys" running a country in this world. Currious.

Democracy. What a farse in and of its self. Modern intelectuals already know that Democracy is a deeply flawed system of government; It's like milk........you buy it, and its good...........for a time; then it goes bad.

It's my feeling that Democracy has run its course and is no-longer a viable framework for addressing the issues of today. Democracy has allowed corporations to RULE our western world. In my oppinion, this is a reggresive trend. When Western corporations head to the East, they do so for profits......period. They abandon the very people that have made them wealthy, and "lay waste" to the social structures that allow them to exist (the middle class).

Am I the only one that has a problem with this? Lets see; you increase trade with a country because it makes you (a corporation) rich. You in turn, make (China lets say) the most powerfull nation on earth.

Westerners then become "surfs" ........but thats o.k. because the CEO is rich, and his kids will still attend Harvard (it's a tradition afterall) and all is well. Wages fall off the map and corporations hire from a watershed of fresh new immigrants..........it's cheap!

REVOLUTION .........CIVIL WAR................and CHAOS.

Wow, I love this global economy. Dispicable greed, moral decisions becoming " fiscal speed-bumps" and the fabric of our fore-fathers being wiped away by spine-less beurocrats.

Canadians have to wake up. Isolationist policy has never been popular but hey, it was never needed before.

Now it is. We're sitting on a gold mine and our policies have to change.

STEP 1: We (Canadians) own our resources and they should be sold to other western nations (europe preferably) and should not fund our own downfall in ASIA. Don't allow it.

STEP 2: At least VOTE! Corporations take advantage of the fact that most Canadians havn't a clue. They love it! They sell you out daily to foreign interests because of greed. You pay the taxes! They don't! Remember, if corporations paid propper taxes in Canada, you and I could have excellent healthcare, education and bennefits.

STEP 3: fill in as you wish.........

He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.

In fact, yes, it is beside THIS point. Though I'm quite surprised to see you recognize that.

I imagine much in life surprises you, Fig. What I was suggesting is that the solemn statement of a murdering scumbag that someone else is not a murdering scumbag is not something most of us would consider reliable testimony.

If a murdering scumbag shouts to you "Hey, there's a piano falling on you!" are you going to debate the provenance of the warning or are you going to get out of the way?

Not quite the same thing. But hey, if you think the word of Vladimir Putin is worth anything in terms of whether someone is a terrorist or murderer then have fun.

So, do you believe Putin is fighting Muslim terrorism in Russia or is he fighting heroic freedom fighters?
