Guest Warwick Green Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Australia's Prime Minister John Howard has made a direct appeal to Australia's Lebanese community for understanding over the delays in evacuations from the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Louise Willis reports, Mr Howard says it is offensive for some Lebanese Australians to suggest the Government has abandoned them. Speaking on Arabic Language radio 2ME, Mr Howard rejected oppositions claims that other countries had been better at managing evacuations. "You can't be certain that other countries have been greatly more successful in evacuating their citizens," he said. "The main message I want to convey to distressed relatives in Australia and indeed through them to their loved ones in Lebanon, is that we are concerned, we have not abandoned them and any suggestion we have is unfair and I reject it totally, completely, but we are doing our best." More Australians were expected to leave today on British and Greek warships, with more than six other ships hired by the government due to arrive on Friday and during the weekend.... http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/news/stor...5.htm?Australia Quote
