A 24 hour trip to what used to be the most Catholic country in Europe. A short meeting with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was more a formality than anything.

When Franco was dictator the Church basically ran the country. How times change.

Pope Benedict XVI has strongly defended the traditional family during a brief visit to the Spanish city of Valencia.

The government has introduced a number of reforms including gay marriage, but the Pope insisted there were some things the Church had to reject.

"The family is a unique institution in God's plan, and the church cannot fail to proclaim and promote its fundamental importance," he said....
