In 1837 the Canadian settler of Quebec and Ontario rebelled against British colonial rule. They eventually formed a new governance structure that would become today’s confederation. Unlike their American counterparts however, the confederation structure never gave Canada a unified national identity.

It wasn't a rebellion against mother England. It was more of a call for so-called 'responsible government' where elected officials are responsible to the people - akin to what the Congress once was. Those ruling the colony of Canada at that time (Upper / Lower Canada) were hugely  corrupt (akin to the Trump administration) - the so-called, 'Family Compacts"  made all the decisions and appointed  those in leadership positions. They were the ruling class and to a large degree mirrored British, peer system.

The local farmers rebelled, local militia scared the shit out of them and they were dispersed  - akin to the Beerhall Putsch. Ur correct tho, it did eventually lead (Lord Durham's Report) to responsible government. At the time of confederation Canada was comprised of (4) provinces. The CPR really was the national project that tied it all together.

Arguably if the CPR hadn't settled the Prairie and B.C. the Manifest Destiny  would have prevailed.

  • paxamericana changed the title to Canadian had their rebellion too, how unoriginally American of them.
