There is one officer, unarmed of course, for every nine-person unit. Think of him as a night clerk rather than a correctional officer. He sits at a desk and checks inmates in and out as they shuffle back and forth between the healing centre, the sculpture studio, and the superbly equipped gym.

Half of the inmates are on drugs, (front line officers at Fenbrook put the number at 90%) but there is nothing that prison authorities can do about it. That's because Fenbrook is classified exactly the same way as any other public building, making invasive searches of suspected drug carriers next to impossible.

Prisons are tough in Canada

Bring back the death penalty, among other things...

I don't think you'll hear Thomas Sophonow or David Milgaard calling for a return of the death penalty.

No doubt you are right BM. But it should be the option in extreme cases...we have DNA evidence now.

Someone like Homolka should have gotten the death penalty for her atrocious crimes...Canada's justice system is pro-criminal...

What an infuriating article. We are far too soft on criminals. It's disgusting that the prisoners are going to vote almost 100% Liberal. What does that tell you?

As for the death penalty talk above:

I would be in favor of putting Clifford Olson to death. He admitted killing a dozen children and for a $100,000 payment (which went to his wife and kids), he directed the RCMP to the graves of children he had killed.

Not only is he a serial killer, he is a serial killer of children, and I resent paying for his upkeep.

Once in a while, nature makes a mistake.

I'd have no problems inserting the needle myself into this scumbag of scumbags...

I tend to agree, the federal system is too easy, but Canada has some absolutely BRUTAL provincial prisons. Maybe we could find some kind of happy middle along the way.

The death penalty is pointless, it is cheaper to keep someone locked up for there entire lives and you won't be executing any innocent people along the way. Not that I have a moral objection, but it’s just about the most impractical solution there is.

No doubt you are right BM. But it should be the option in extreme cases...we have DNA evidence now.

I see this as one of the major problems going forward, DNA evidence is very rarely as conclusive as it’s made out to be.

I agree, but when the prosecutors make a deal they have to stick to it even if it wasn't a good one in retrospect. It sucks that such a human being got off so lightly but sometimes the cost of honor is high.
