The happy news from Dalton is that amongst other things; if you live in Southern or Eastern Ont, you may have to suck up some proposed "drive clean" changes.

If your beater is 12 years old or more, it will be tested every year as opposed to every second year as is the case now.

The repair costs you "may have to pay" have been raised from $450 to $600 to ensure your car breathes cleaner :blink:

If you live in Northern Ont., the drive clean does not apply. Harris must have been planning to run again that year.

I'm sure I'm not the only one running an older car (passed every time by the way); but does it not seem the $600 is a tad high?

The way it is now, the most the garage can charge you is $450, and the problem may or may not be fixed.

I've been to Toronto, and we still got smog there. Drive clean has been in for a few years now.

Is it just me...........? :unsure::(

Older cars are the most polluting cars on the road so any anti-pollution program needs to ensure these cars are as clean as possible or taken off the road. What you need to look for or lobby for is a program like this in BC:

To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

My beater is over 14 years with over 500,000 clicks and gives no sign of quiting - the secret is that I have been talking to the machine even since I brought her home. I have not done any major repairs on this baby but if I have to pay this much with drive clean I sure have to find some alternatives - carpool

But if your car is over 20 yrs old (pre '85), your car is exempt from this test. The whole drive clean program really is just a farce.

And BTW, Ontario does have a similar program, though the incentives are not quite as good (tax receipt for charitable donation I believe).

I believe in the drive clean programme but the of the smog we get in southern Ontario comes from our good neighbour to the south. Our air won't get any cleaner until our southern neighbours adopt the same policies as we have.

Took the 96 Mazda beater in last week 172000 on the clock and it passed with flying colours. A much newer Chevy 01 or or 02 with far less miles failed. The Mazda has been very well maintained and driven reasonably. Go figure.
