RB Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 See the death of HBC and Sears to go next I mean these big high end stores need to know when to call it quits otherwise, diversify your business folks to compete with Walmart types - discounted stores, get real with market demographics most Canadians are poor Canada is bringing 700,000 more immigrants into the land - you don't thinks these are the folks that will purchase expensive goods Quote
mcqueen625 Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Myself, I could care less about HBC, simply because they have no real presence in my province other than through their ownership of Zellers. I stopped shopping at Zellers, when they bought out K-Mart, and converted the stores to Zellers outlets. When WalMart came to my city I totally stopped shopping Zellers because of the lousy service at the Zeller's stores. I have heard the running joke about Zellers is that a person could fire a cannon down through the store and never have to worry about hitting a staff member. On the other hand upon entering WalMart everywhere you look there are staff member to assist a person to find what they are looking for, and once the item is found there is usually someone in that department who can intelligently answer any questions one might have about the product. Service like that from my experience is totally lacking at Zellers. Quote

Walmart has no intelligent life on their payroll, there store is jampacked with stuff, narrow aisles, always full to the brim(probably more than a fire code would accept), long waits for check-out, and generally trashy stuff. Zellers has an older based staff, very friendly and somewhat knowledgable, roomy aisles, comparative prices, shorter check-out lines, fewer shoppers(because most are at Walmart), but they still have trashy merchandise too!!! I refuse to shop at Walmart, although Zellers has no cell service and my business is dependant on my cell phone. I only buy kitty litter or cleaning stuff at Zellers, but it is an ok experience versus a nut show at Walmart. I like Sears, but it is hard to get the cheap stuff there. They don't compete in prices at all. The only way they'll survive is in bigger cities where money isn't so much a factor. Yodeler Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 I like Sears, but it is hard to get the cheap stuff there. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How far down the ladder have we gone to consider Sears to be an upscale store? But now that Target is ready to buy out The Bay, things are looking up. "Tar-jay" ..... I like it. Quote

Anyway Sears control 13.8% market share, Bay 5.1, Zellers 4.5 and Walmart 6.9 Four years ago Sears and Bay were doing better Walmart only controlled about 3% then. Companies like Sears and Bay are not fit for Toronto Quote
