Canada's unions side with Venezuela's dictator

I find this really disgusting. I support unions. I was a union shop steward. But I can attest to how much money they waste, money the membership is required to contribute. The fact these unions sent some of their scummy far left leaders down to Venezuela to help support the contention from the murderous Venezuelan government that they had a free and fair election is contemptible. I guarantee you their membership isn't happy with this kind of crap, but the undemocratic nature of union governance gives them little say in it.

I think that union leaders should have to be elected directly by members. As it stands now the members only vote for their local president, then this group of local presidents and activists gets to elect those above them, and so on. I bet if the members knew tens of thousands of dollars of their money had been spent to send these people on a holiday to play footsie with Venezuela's brutal dictatorship they'd be voted out of office next election, if they got a vote.

The group of six Canadian observers, among them representatives of Common Frontiers, Unifor, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), the United Church of Canada and Rabble.ca, lauded Venezuela’s “strong and vibrant democracy,” however, in a report published by Common Frontiers after the May 2018 trip. United Steelworkers and a Toronto personal injury law firm, Carranza LLP, also provided “delegation support,” according to the report.

“We witnessed a transparent, secure, democratic and orderly electoral and voting process,” the document concludes. “Our delegation was impressed by the electoral process and felt confident that the results of the elections represent the will of the majority of Venezuelans who voted.”

So Venezuela has foreign entities meddling in their internal affairs?? Why am I not surprised? And here I thought the Russians were bad, now we got Canadian unions being worse, and with evidence of it.

I think it demonstrates just how blind and willfully deluded people are willing to be if something suits their ideological beliefs. That's contemptible enough. It's worse that these people are supposed to be representing Canadian workers, and instead are using their money to fly to Venezuela to chum around with it's dictator.
