mirror Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Ottawa set to suspend salmon fishing on Fraser Federal fisheries officials are expected to announce later today that the commercial fishery for summer sockeye salmon on the Fraser River will not open this year. Experts had initially forecast a strong year, with 11 million summer sockeye salmon on the Fraser. However, officials with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans now say they anticipate around three million fish. Officials attribute the dramatic miscalculation to a failure to measure the impact of the devastating effect of warmer-than-usual water in the Pacific Ocean and the Fraser River. I have heard stories of DFO employees working at DFO and also at the same time being paid consultants or lobbyists for the fish farm industry. I have also watched year after year, turmoil over the inaccurate DFO salmon run estimates, for the rivers of BC. Isn't it about time we had an inquiry into this federal government department, so that we can clean up the mess that exists there? Quote
SirSpanky Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 10 years ago was the time for an inquiry. Talk about having no balls; here is your poster child organization. They effectively managed the downfall of a lucrative and important industry... Inquiry? No. I don't know what the word for it is, but cleansing sounds about right, under the supervision of an intelligent, unafraid minister. Quote
mirror Posted August 19, 2005 Author Report Posted August 19, 2005 Where have all the salmon gone? This is going to have serious ramafications if we lose our West Coast salmon runs. Apparently the warmer water is having some kind of detrimential effect although this year's water in not as warm as last years. One just don't know what or who to believe. Quote
