crazymf
Duhh, maybe I'm wishing on a star here, but who is the most unbiased news media out there? I can get totally different spins on the same topic depending on who I watch and read. My observation is that CNN shelters the American public as much as possible from the realities of the world. Case point: Canada's women won the gold medal in hockey in a game against the Americans at the Salt Lake games. The next morning, CNN reported how the American women 'won' the Silver Medal. Where do you guys mostly get your facts?? Quote The trouble with the legal profession is that 98% of its members give the rest a bad name. Don't be humble - you're not that great. theloniusfleabag
Dear crazymf, who is the most unbiased news media out there? That is a toughie. They are all biased, to certain degree. One of the best I have found, surprisingly, (or not, to some) is Al-Jazeera. They are not 'rabidly pro-arabic' as many might think. However, I always try to get as much info as I have time for from many sources, and both sides, if I can, so I also have Arutz Sheva (Israel National News) in my favourites. This is mostly for middle eastern news, mind you, so it depends on what topics you are interested in. There is no single news service that can be depended on to 'tell it like it is', really. In Calgary, years ago, I had written a letter to the editor of the Calgary Sun, and in it, referred to Peter Stockland as 'Mr. Right-Wing Fascist Editor'. Wouldn't you know, within 1-2 years Stockland was moved over to the Herald because it was deemed that the Herald was 'too far left' and needed to be brought in line 'with how Calgarians truly think'. At the time, they were 'the only games in town' until the ultra-left National Post came into town. Now we have three right-wing 'news sources' to choose from. Argus
Dear crazymf, who is the most unbiased news media out there? That is a toughie. They are all biased, to certain degree. One of the best I have found, surprisingly, (or not, to some) is Al-Jazeera. They are not 'rabidly pro-arabic' as many might think. No, of course not. They regularly report every Israeli murder and injury, cover the funerals, show the sobbing families, and display the bloody, torn up bodies of the murdered Israelis so that the Arab world can sympathise with them. Just kidding! Actually, Al Jazeera does that for all Palestinian casualties. My understanding is they rarely even mention attacks on Israelis. The Arab world is supposed to believe all Israeli attacks are simply for sport. Jews like to drink blood, after all. Riverwind
Where do you guys mostly get your facts??I have come the conclusion there is no such thing as unbiased media. Anyone who writes or reports on anything likely has a view point that colours the coverage. Furthermore, as our choices in news sources increase market forces cause many media outlets to cater to their core support which often means running stories that will not offend anyone in their target audience. That is why a newspaper in Calgary needs to show an extreme right wing bias where as a Toronto daily has to be extremely left wing.To get around this I try to get by news from different sources with different biases so I can hear all sides of the issue and form my own opinion. I find CBC Radio, the Globe and Mail, the Economist magazine and Google News to be the best place to find reasonable unbiased opinions and different perspectives. I will also read the the National Post periodically but I find the substance to blatant partisanship ratio a little to low to make it worth paying for a subscription. Guest eureka
Roughly once a week, I partake of a very long coffe break with an old friend of mine. Bill was a journalist of stature in the days of Berton, Fotheringham and Newman et al. He knew them all. In one of our recent conversations, he told me that he thought today's journalists are as good as the old but they are more governed by special interests. The other major differences he spoke of were that today's crop are less instinctive - that is ironed out of them in journalism schools and that they are far more circumspect with each other because there are no longer the "paper" wars of his day. I heard some amusing stories of the lengths his contemporaries went to to be first to file a story (such as cutting a competitor's phone line)> Interestingly, he also said that the major difference in columnists views is in the strong of adjectives they use - it seems that most of the most prolific have almost a Rolodex of adjectives and phrases - and that they are not too much different in essence. theloniusfleabag
Dear Argus, My understanding is theyWhere do you get your 'understanding' from? I urge you to try reading it. I also urge you to try reading Arutz Sheva. They are both biased, for their own cause of course, but I find it helps to understand their viewpoint juxtaposed to ours a bit better. For example, I found out that many Israelis don't like much America either. Quote Would the Special Olympics Committee disqualify kids born with flippers from the swimming events? crazymf
What I'm hearing is what I have felt from the beginning of the thread. You can find someone who will spin the facts to suit yourself. Quote The trouble with the legal profession is that 98% of its members give the rest a bad name.
