Riverwind Posted June 5, 2005 Report Posted June 5, 2005 I found this on another blog: Here's a bit of history from the lastminority Parliament that may be of interest. From the book, "200 Days:Joe Clark in Power" by Warner Troyer, pp.161-162 "One of the Socred M.P.s, unilingual francophone Richard Janelle, bolted his party and joined the Prime Minister for an announcement he would henceforth sit in the government benches. There had been no price or promises exacted for the defection, said (Joe) Clark. (And indeed Janelle had to wait several weeks for his appointment as a parliamentary secretary.)" "...Roch Lasalle redoubled his efforts to attract more recruits from both Socred and Liberal Quebec ranks... But by late September Joe Clark had to put Lasalle on a shorter leash. One Liberal M.P.,Celine Hervieux-Payette, told reporters she'd been guaranteed a cabinet post if she'd switch parties." "(Social Credit leader) Fabian Roy may have had the last laugh. On September 28 it was revealed he'd written R.H. Simmonds, Commissioner of the RCMP, asking for a full investigation of possible illegal activities by Progressive Conservatives who were the subject of "rumours that the M.P. for Lotbiniere [Janelle] was offered a post" to defect. Clark's Solicitor General Allen Lawrence felt obliged to reply that the charges were "some sort of public relations dodge by the Social Credit" Quote To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.
Shakeyhands Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 Interesting how it all works sometimes. I still think Grewal is full of it though.... People tend to forget that we voted in a minority and in order to get things done there needs to be some negotiation and give and take.
