It would have been far more to their advantage to have called this election last year or in the spring, when the economic downturn due to oil falling was pretty easy to see coming down the road. They did not do this because of the set election time they created.

That could be true, or perhaps like a lot of people, Harper didn't think the tanking oil prices would last as long as it has, or is likely to.. In any case, he has not given up the privilege.
