caesar Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 Now hear this:Front page of today's Vancouver Sun: EXPERT SAYS Citizen's Assembly voting proposal is, are you ready for it caesar: "VOTER FRIENDLY" Big deal for every "expert" (expert what???) that claims one thing ; one can find 10 more that will claim the opposite. donvonbra Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 We are a society of vested interests. Groups will look at the BC proposal only within the context of how it helps them, not what is does for democracy. don Quote
caesar Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 You have that right don. We do need to improve the accountability of our politicians and ensure we never again have a government without an official opposition. I would like to see government a little more open to scrutiny. We should have binding referendums on major issues. At the present time; politicians say one thing prior to the election then do otherwise once elected. The MPs or MLAs should not be able to vote on raises to their salaries or expense accounts. Personally, I would like to see a stronger central government and end the infighting and deals between provinces and/or provinces and feds. I believe that the public is used and made to suffer while provincial government try to squeeze more money out of the feds. Where is the incentive to have our Health care system run smoothly and efficiently when the Provinces use the failures of their medical systems to squeeze more money from the feds. That was evident in their demand for no strings. Quote
playfullfellow Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 I do agree with you here caesar on the government has to have better accountability these days. Things are out of control all over the place. On the issue of a stronger central government, I am definately a fence sitter here. If the right person is in control, then it can work very well but the track record shows a constant favourtism towards Ontario and Quebec in the past. With a stronger central government, I feel this would only get worse. This would only lead to more people being disenchanted with the whole voting process. Currently, I could not back a stronger central government, until we have proper accountability institutions in place. Quote
