maplesyrup Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Bankruptcy is a failure of the economic system, and corporate executives need to be punished not rewarded in these situations. What better time to reflect on these peversions than today Labour Day, which is a time to reflect on the true economic realities, and to celebrate the honest working people, and particularly those working men and women that resist the abuses of the suits. maplesyrup Posted September 6, 2004 Author Report Posted September 6, 2004 CLC delivers labour report card What are you doing today to show your appreciation to all the working people that have gone before us, some who have even laid down their lives to create better working conditions for the average person? Hard won benefits such as weekends, overtime, sick days, pension plans, unemployment insurance, 40 hour work week, holidays, safe work sites, health care, etc. Every major urban area in Canada will be having some kind of Labour Day celebration - in the Lower Mainland there will an organized workers'celebration at Confederation Park in North Burnaby, roughly in the Wellingdon - Hastings area. Particularly if you have never been to one before, take your kids today and go and celebrate with the other working people in Canada. Hjalmar Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Hard won benefits such as weekends, overtime, sick days, pension plans, unemployment insurance, 40 hour work week, holidays, safe work sites, health care, etc. What a joke!!! You're suggesting that the world would have stood still over the past 50 years had it not been for labour unions! Quote

RB Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Bankruptcy is a failure of the economic system, and corporate executives need to be punished not rewarded why so? in good strategic planning bankruptcy is a consideration, and a good executive must know when to bail Quote
maplesyrup Posted September 6, 2004 Author Report Posted September 6, 2004 Sounds like businesspeople will rationalize anything. RB Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 well i just don't agree with your use of bankcruptcy as it relates to people striving for high ideals, firstly in prepackaged bankcruptcy the company re-emerges almost instantly how much did it impact the economy Secondly bankcruptcies are not all about distress, in 1992 Olympia & York's cash flow was encouraged to restructuring and reorganization even though they sought court action to avoid formal bankruptcy. not all excutives are bad, they consider their options, and decide is a company worth more dead or alive, then they kill it Quote
maplesyrup Posted September 6, 2004 Author Report Posted September 6, 2004 CLC chief slams treatment of civil servants Federal and provincial governments were blasted for their treatment of public servants Monday as the head of the Canadian Labour Congress accused governments of failing to set an example for private-sector employers.Congress president Ken Georgetti marked Labour Day by criticizing Ottawa for its handling of a job action by 4,800 Parks Canada workers that has been going on for three weeks. “I always thought that our government should be trying to set the example, not trying to be the worst employer,” Mr. Georgetti told reporters in Halifax at one a number of events held across the country. Mr. Georgetti said ongoing criticism from the government and opposition groups aimed at the country's bureaucracy could make it harder to keep workers from leaving for the private sector. “If Mr. Martin and his cabinet don't get in front of this thing, they're going to find themselves in a severe labour shortage,” he said. Mr. Georgetti also said Labour Day celebrations across the country should be moved to May 1, to coincide with May Day activities held in other countries and to boost the turnout at rallies. Regardless of the problems, the CLC chief said the labour movement is strong across the country, adding that there are more full-time jobs now than ever before. He said unions improve workers' quality of life and help local economies as a result. “I say to all governments across this country, have respect for the citizens you employ,” Mr. Georgetti said. “You have to be the example, not the exception.” Will brain-dead politicians like Gordon Campbell or Stephen Harper ever learn that it is to society's advatage to treat our labour force with dignity and respect, eh? playfullfellow Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 What are you doing today to show your appreciation to all the working people that have gone before us, some who have even laid down their lives to create better working conditions for the average person? Hard won benefits such as weekends, overtime, sick days, pension plans, unemployment insurance, 40 hour work week, holidays, safe work sites, health care, etc. Ummmm, I worked, is that enough appreciation? Had to work to make deadlines and pay extra taxes for these fine social programs we have. 40 hour work week, whats that? I thought it was around 60 or so hours, at least it is for me. Weekends, just time to do more work I guess. Overtime? I work two jobs, one for an employer, don't get overtime there and am also self employed, nope no overtime there either. EI, been paying into it for 19 years, never used it. Sick days, too damn busy to get sick, our policy, if its cold, wear a toque. I may sound a bit sarcastic but in all reality, I like to work and don't really care about these other benefits. I never have time to use them anyways. I would like to see my taxes go down so I would not have to work 60 plus hours per week to pay the bills, now that would be a real benefit. Quote
