maplesyrup Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 'Import' more youngsters, Ottawa urged Immigrants, refugees: Need to counter declining fertility rate, analyst says Norma Greenaway CanWest News Service August 9, 2004 OTTAWA - Canada should throw open its borders to young immigrants and refugees, especially children, to offset gaps caused by the country's ageing population, says Tom Kent, a one-time social policy guru for the Liberal party. "In the early 20th century, the immigrants most needed were farmers," Mr. Kent writes in a newly published essay for the Institute for Research and Public Policy. "Later, they were skilled industrial workers. In this century, the need is different again. Youth is prime." Mr. Kent says the federal government must shift to a youth-oriented immigration policy because the diminished fertility rate has produced a scarcity of children in Canada. He argues it is wrong-headed to think of immigration as the answer to the problems of an ageing population if the average age of the immigrants is much the same as that of Canadians now at work. "If we want to restore a balanced group of ages in the population, then we need young people," Mr. Kent said in an interview. Kind of refreshing to hear someone speak out on Canadian issues who actually knows how to use his brain. Kent seems like an interesting fellow. If you remember he's the same fellow who wrote: Repair of Taxation" Mr Kent is raising a valid point about Canada's immigration policies. Sometimes I wonder if many people think outside the box in Ottawa. Like what is Canada's immigration game plan? At the moment it seems we are importing nude dancers who have to show their portfolio (resume) to Canada's immigration officers to prove they are legit.
