Canada probes "third man" in New Zealand-Israel spy saga

OTTAWA : An espionage scandal which engulfed Israeli-New Zealand relations took a new twist, as Canada probed whether a fugitive spy suspect in the intrigue was using a stolen Canadian passport.

New Zealand suspended high-level contacts with Israel after two suspected members of Israel's Mossad intelligence service were jailed for trying to fraudulently obtain New Zealand passports.

A third man, Zev William Barkan, 37, is being hunted by New Zealand police in connection with the scandal, according to reports in Auckland.

It is that "third man" in the intrigue that has attracted the attention of Canadian authorities.

Canadian Foreign Affairs ministry spokesman Reynald Doiron said officials were looking into reports that Barkan was travelling on a stolen Canadian passport in the name of Kevin William Hunter.

What in the world is going on here? This in not the first time that a Mossad member has been caught with a stolen Canadian passport. Did Isreal steal Canadian passports?

`Spy' may carry Canadian ID

Canada is taking the allegation seriously given that two Mossad hitmen were caught seven years ago in Jordan with phony Canadian passports following a bungled attempt to kill a Hamas leader. Canada subsequently sought and received assurances from Israel that its passport would not be abused.

I am not really sure what your point with this thread is MS aside from the fact that a foreign country may be using a bogus Canadian passport so it's operatives can travel more freely around the world. Well, this sort of stuff goes on everyday all over the world and it is not just foreign governments that use bogus passports but also criminals. So why are you picking on the Mossad?

The mossad seems to have a pattern of using Canadian passports and has previously promised to stop. It could cause real Canadians trouble if countries start to wonder whether a Canadian passport means the person is Candian or an Israeli spy.

In any case I think that the Israel's use Canada's passport should in some way be flattering. I mean, of all the counrtries in the world they keep choosing Canada's so their people don't get harrassed. Says something about the respect the rest of the world holds for us.

Hmmm...maybe they use Cdn documentation because it is known to be so high tech. For example, in Alberta we have these fancy new drivers licenses that they claim are very secure...likely the best in the country. Unfortunately, they do not just present them to you like the old ones, they mail them to you. Not surprisingly, some people are complaining that they are being mailed to the wrong address.

I was looking at the board index, and a guest was reviewing this topic. Interesting because I was just reading a book called "By Way Of Deception", by Victor Ostrovsky. He was a former Mossad 'katsa' (agent) and he claimed to have seen, in a 'mossad proprietary', over 1,000 brand new Canadian passports, ready for use. He suspected that they must have been stolen, but there was no story about it in the news. In that business, they had all the equipment and chemicals to replicate any passport paper of any country, but Canadian passports were much preferred by the Mossad. Further, for 'proprietary companies', ( or 'front businesses', much like the ones the CIA uses) the Mossad had some 70+% of theirs in Canada.
