Guest Peeves Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 IFonly the one avoiding the vaccination was at threat, that would be a different issue, but avoiding a 'shot' puts others more at risk. There are all kinds of unsupported claims of varied health conditions given as reasons for avoiding a vaccination, some causing parents to chose to home school, but if you attend a public school I think you should be required to have your immunizations. http://www.thestar.com/news/article/1118567--toronto-seeks-more-mandatory-vaccinations?bn=1 Excerpt: that the public health unit wants more vaccines added to the list.Currently, elementary and high school students must be vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria and polio. Without proof of those shots, students can be suspended for up to 20 days, unless they provide a notarized “statement of conscience or religion” to the public health unit. The threat of suspension, coupled with sending reminder notices home to parents, leads to nearly 100 per cent immunization coverage for the 6 listed diseases. Less than two per cent of parents choose to exempt their children. But the law requiring schoolchildren to be immunized was written 22 years ago and has not been updated to reflect additions to the province’s publicly funded immunization schedule, which now includes vaccines against chickenpox, meningitis, whooping cough, rotavirus, invasive pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, and human papilloma virus for girls. “So we’re calling on the ministry to take a look at what additional vaccines there is good evidence to add to the mandatory program,” said Dr. Michael Finkelstein, the city’s associate medical officer of health. Wild Bill Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Good thing the Nazis lost the war... I would compare Nazis with anyone who forces my children to be around unvaccinated children! Either no vaccination means your kid must be schooled at home or the government must pay for MY kids to be schooled at home! To force me to put MY children at risk over the decision of SOMEONE ELSE over a vaccination strikes me as a more close definition of fascism! Guest Manny Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 My concern is not that vaccinations are bad for people. It's that there is a risk that pharmaceutical companies try to convince us and put pressure on governments to carry out large-scale vaccinations of their "product", when in fact such is not warranted. The so-called "Big Pharma" are primarily motivated by making profit, and are constantly coming up with new potions to cure some societal ill or another. Sometimes this is done even when rational statistical analysis shows otherwise. Its almost like they ramp up the hysteria, through news stories. SARS, West Nile, Bird flu are scary sounding names for diseases that never lived up to their hype. And although it's a good idea to be prudent or careful when it comes to a potential pandemic, the government/ media needs to stop crying wolf every time there's a new bug making the rounds. Why? Because after a while people won't listen any more, and then when it's serious they'll be complacent. It's only by intelligent use of carefully tested, carefully considered vaccination that these programs will be safe and useful. Quote
dre Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 I think some vaccinations should be mandatory, but only ones that are extremely well understoon and tested. And only vaccines that are generic, nothing with patent protection. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
Guest Peeves Posted February 9, 2012 Report Posted February 9, 2012 Any required, mandatory, specified, or a requirement for attendance. If someone would rather home school and risk their kid that's currently a choice, but it might be eventually considered child abuse by F& C S. Like blood transfusions for a child. Quote

That being said, if you refuse to get your kid vaccinated, then I want my kid to be nowhere near yours! Guest Manny Posted February 10, 2012 Report Posted February 10, 2012 Whatever! You have the right to your opinion, the same as anyone else. Correct. As long as it's a free society, I do. That's why I posted earlier, Good thing the Nazis lost!! Quote

kolak Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Why? If your kids have the vaccine... Well vaccines work more on a herd level, vaccines don't necessarily protect you 100%. But if you and everyone in your environment is vaccinated then everyone is closer to that 100% (until the disease in question is wiped out). And in my opinion anti-vaccine groups fall into the likes of other first world problem band wagons. Just spoiled people that take things for granted. Quote
