Shwa Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 From the Star: Veteran Tory MPP Norm Sterling loses nomination battle Norm Sterling, a veteran Progressive Conservative MPP and former cabinet minister, has been bounced as an Ottawa-area candidate for his party in Ontario's fall election.Sterling, whose 34-year career at Queen's Park began when Bill Davis was premier, lost a tense nomination battle Thursday night in the riding of Carleton-Mississippi Mills to Ontario Landowners Association activist and cash-crop farmer Jack MacLaren after ballots were tallied in the Ottawa suburb of Kanata. It had been a tight race that caught the attention of politicos of all stripes at Queen's Park because MacLaren had the backing of Conservative MPP Randy Hillier, who is considered a renegade by some colleagues and has also been active in the landowners association that sometimes favoured radical means to push its agenda of rural and property rights. I wonder how far the OLA agenda can be pushed within the provincial Tory ranks? Or how far the OLA agenda can be pushed constitutionally, which to me, is a big stretch... Quote

Now that Randy Hillier has successfully got a longtime ,pragmatic Tory with a lot of party suppport ousted, like Norm Sterling... One has to rightfully wonder how far to the right the PC party in Ontario has gone ??? If folks as nutty as Randy Hillier are going to start to push thier agenda,do we really need a Tory majority in this province??? The kooks seem to be on the loose in the Ontario PC party.... Be afraid...Be very afraid!!!! Quote The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!

Be afraid...Be very afraid!!!! To me, Sterling was a Tory's Tory. I would have voted for the guy. But this shift is a little too iffy and, for what it's worth, property ownership is a federal fight that a provincial government simply cannot win. So why pick off the Ontario Tories and why did Hudak allow this sort of thing to happen? I think that if Smarmy Tim get's in there will be a whole lot of people wishing for a moderate government like Harris if this is the direction they are going in... Quote

Sterling was in the Bill Davis government...I can't remember if he was in cabinet.. Bill Davis was the last good premier this province had,not because he was a PC,but because he was prepared to listen to all sides of an issue and find the common ground. Norm Sterling comes from that model, and I agree,he's a Tory I could vote for...Even though he was in the Harris cabinet,he never seemed to be as stridently ideological as the Harrisites... The problem I heared was that behind the scenes, the hardline ex-Harris folks(and Hillier is the most out there of all those types) might stage a "palace coup" if Hudak backed Sterling... This is very telling about exactly what side is running the PC party in Ontario...Sterling was a connected party guy,and essentially Hillier moved him out... I would'nt exactly Harris a "moderate",however,it may seem that way if Hudak is taking his marching orders from the Hillier types... The kooks are apparently on the loose in the Ontario PC party...
