This is a country wide issue, of course, but this Star article focuses mostly on the impact in Ontario.

Ottawa ends enhanced EI program

Ok, so the program had a drop dead date and the government is sticking to it. But should they, or should they be extending the program and the Second Career programs which have been a bit of a fiasco for the provincial government.

As long as the economy isn't recovering the way it should, it should be extended. If Harper sticks to his guns on this, it'll be awfully easy to run an election on for the opposition. Especially considering this hits Ontario the hardest, this may not be the smartest thing for him to do. Cancelling EI benefits while building prisons? Something tells me this won't go over too well.

It won't go over well to those that are actually looking or aware.

I could go along with the EI benefit extension continuting in certain regions, but this whole timing seems so interesting in my part of the country. Happy pronouncements about the state of economy, infrastructure dollars moving public construction along, GM saying they have recovered enough to get the lines back up and producing and EI benefits ending. Almost like some serendipitous coincidence. Funny how modern recessions work this way.

The Ontario Second Career program however needs a close inspection and upfront public audit. Especially now that all those Second Career students are graduating out of their programs.
